Three teams join Sweet 16 this week (11.1)

The top 10 spots remained safe in this week's version of the Sweet 16 football poll, but we had the most movement of the season in the final six spots.

Three teams dropped out - Newton-Conover (No. 11 last week), Charlotte Latin (No. 12) and Berry (No. 14). Lincolnton moved up to spots to No. 11. Kannapolis Brown jumped three spots to No. 12.

Three teams joined the poll. Clover (S.C.) is back after dropping out for a few weeks.

Clover beat Rock Hill 35-14 Friday. Also in this week is unbeaten South Iredell, which upset Newton-Conover last week, and Providence Day, which got a Mecklenburg County record 378 yards rushing from Josh Covington in Friday's win over Charlotte Christian.

Providence Day, which begins the playoffs Friday, shared the Charlotte Independent Schools' regular-season conference title with Charlotte Latin and Charlotte Country Day.

This is why I dropped my subscription to the Observer. They are not allowing comments (even though 120 weighed in quickly). Funny that a news entity is limiting free speech. Pay the price Observer.

p.s. talking about the death by misdemeanor case of the Butler player.

Looking forward to next week, when Sweet 16 rankings will no longer matter, and playoff seeding can then be argued.
BTW- I know their classifications, but they are not listed for AL Brown, S. Iredell, Clover, and Providence Day.

Why didn't Piedmont move up to at least where Berry was last week? 14th. We won last Friday night against N. Stanly 21 - 0. We have history just like the rest of these teams. Our only loss came to Porter Ridge this year, and they are a 4A school. I guess if we win Friday night against Berry Academy to clinch the Rocky River Conference Championship we might move up to 15th. Probably not....

To the Piedmont aupporter- from fellow Panthers at Hibriten, I can tell you: this poll and this paper is not going to get you the approval you are looking for. If you get ranked, rejoice, but they are not going to cover you unless your school is in Charlotte or has a "Ridge" or "Day" in its name.
The place to earn what you are looking for will be next week. Use the playoffs to show the Observer and the rest of the 2-A ranks what Panther football is all about.

As a former PANTHER but now a PIRATE from the split, I'm pulling for both teams. I had the opportunity to coach kids from both schools and it's very exciting to see them both doing so well. Could Union County be making a run in all divisions this year? Marvin Ridge should do well also.

I'd wager to guess that either "Day" could beat any 2A school in the area

Also, out of 16 teams ranked, there are only 4 teams from Charlotte ranked, and that's if you count Butler. As for the schools that have Day in it, only 1 is ranked, and the one that isn't lost to the ranked one by 1 point and lost to Catholic in overtime. Your team just isn't as good as you like to think.

Union County football is strong this year (except parkwood) Piedmont has made a good run. Southern Carolina 3A/4a conference is very strong with Sun Valley and porter ridge the class of that cofnerence should be a good game and will probably determine who gets a second home playoff game. Iwas at the Proter Ridge/Marvin Ridge game and porter Ridge is good and travelled with a huge fan base. They have speed and size. I believe they will go a long way and should be able to handle Sun Valley easily.

Previous poster is right, Piedmont can only get respect by beating everyone out there. That's ok it just adds motivation. To my "Day" poster, I'm betting you've never seen any 2A school in the area play so easy on the arrogance. Good 2A teams consistently compete with 3A and 4A schools and win their share. I would have no problems putting South Iredell - Newton - Lincolnton or Piedmont against the Day schools and getting a winning record out of it. Yes, I have seen the Day schools play and they would be good games.

I do not think that the 2A teams would come close to competing with any of the Charlotte Independent Schools. They have played in the past and have consistently lost. That, however, is not the purpose of the Sweet 16. The Sweet 16 is a measure of the teams within their respective division's which is why there are 2A teams on there and not the Independent school teams. If it was a measure of who was the best in the region there would be a lot more 3A teams on here.

Not any 2A team just the best ones would compete well. I ask again, have you seen these teams in action? Octavious Harden Newton Conover Shrine Bowl - two linemen from Piedmont w D-1 offers. Piedmont scrimmaged w Hickory Ridge and dominated them and has scrimmaged also w Marvin Ridge and did very well against these 3A teams. Let's see if we can get it scheduled and stop all this gum bumping.

If guru proclaimed Mallard as the best in all NC history and even they brag how they are D1A (LOL)how can Butler be #1 in the Sugarcane 16?

Inexperienced Mallard will choke before they get to Butler. Chasing stats and running up scores keeping in starters was meaningless and weak.

Christian LeMay, Butler, QB, 6-2, 200: Fast, strong-armed star threw 44 TDs and 2 INTs last season; comm. to Georgia.

Who is the dumdum who said this guy, who intentionally skipped his senior year, is #1 pick of the 50 best players ? Please. This is absoluetely the stupidest thing ever written. You cant opt out of playing your senior year you moron because you dont like the punishment and noone ever had the arrogance to attempt such a thing anyway. GA has signed nobody yet and highly unlikely to take him now. Where do they get these writers?

YOU MUST ACTUALLY PARTICIPATE to be recognized as one of the best of 2010.

Moral is dont do the crime if you dont want to do the time. End of story.
