Friday’s Roundup

South Meck 48, Harding 7: The Sabres got their first win of the season, upsetting previously unbeaten Harding. The Sabres had scored just 25 points in their first four games but nearly doubled their season total with the dominant win. South is 1-4 overall, 1-0 in the SoMeck 8. Harding, which was off to its best start in six years, dropped to 3-1, 0-1. The Rams were held to their lowest point total of the year. Steven Griffin Jr., son of former Sabre great Steve Griffin, had two touchdowns rushing and one interception for a touchdown. His father led the Sabres to the 1982 N.C. 4A state title.

South Meck coach Rocky White said after a tough pre-conference schedule -- which included games with 4A powers Independence and Porter Ridge -- the Sabres got a bye at just the right time. The Sabres had two weeks to prepare for Friday’s game.

“It’s starting the conference, man,” Sabres coach Rocky White said. “It’s a whole new season. We had a tough preseason schedule but now it’s a whole new season. We spent a lot of time and went back to fundamentals this week and we had a great week of practice. It paid off tonight.”

The Sabres play at Berry next week and follow that with a games against conference favorites West Meck, Charlotte Catholic and Olympic in consecutive weeks.

“We’re still young,” White said, “but if we stay healthy, we can take everything one rung at time. Our whole focus has been ‘Let’s get to the conference and try to do the best we can and try to claw our way into the playoffs.”

No. 8 Charlotte Christian 32, Liberty Christian (VA) 31: The Knights (5-0) remained unbeaten in a wild game that wasn’t decided until CJ Nash intercepted a Liberty Christian in Knights’ territory with less than 15 seconds left. Christian was down 31-26 and driving but the Knights threw an interception at the Liberty Christian 7 with 2:30 to play. Christian’s defense stopped Liberty Christian and forced a punt that Bo Hines returned 60 yards for score with 71 seconds left. Liberty Christian then drove for what it hoped would be the game-winning points before Nash’s interception. Liberty Christian fell to 4-1.

Christian QB Austin Kendall completed 16 of 21 passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns. Elijah Deveaux rushed 19 times for 118 yards. Hines caught five passes for 70 yards and two scores

Forestview 63, Lake Norman Charter 7: The Gaston Gazette reported that Forestview played the Mecklenburg County school without head coach Chris Medlin, assistant Jon Putnam, junior running back Bishop Ford and senior defensive end Jarvis Jeffries.

The paper reported the players were suspended after being charged with misdemeanors based on accusations of stealing $400 worth of shoes from another student. Medlin and Putnam were suspended for one week, starting Thursday. They will return Wednesday. Both coaches will continue their teaching duties and cannot attend games or practices. Gaston County school officials didn’t comment on the reason for the suspensions. Assistant David Farquharson served as acting head coach Friday as Forestview (4-1, 1-0 Big South 2A/3A) won its fourth straight game. Lake Norman Charter (5-1, 0-1) had outscored its first five opponents 182-44.

Davidson Day 45, Marvin Ridge 0: Will Grier threw for 428 yards and seven touchdowns in the easy win. Grier, a Florida recruit and prep All-American, completed 42-of-54 passes. He also rushed 12 times for 114 yards. Receiver Mike Stevens, a Kansas State recruit, had eight catches for 106 yards and two scores. Jordan Brown had 11 catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns for Davidson Day (6-0).

On homecoming, the Chargers got a pair of first quarter touchdowns from Lawson Ives, from three yards and from 15, en route to a four-touchdown first quarter lead. Providence Day lead 42-0 at halftime. Blake Henderson scored twice in the second quarter.

Country Day 21, Ravenscroft 7: The Bucs won at home behind a solid performance from Thomas Jackson, who had an 80-yard touchdown catch from Cole Bloomer and 10 rushes for 32 yards. Bloomer threw for 108 yards and Sheppard Wilson ran 14 times for 111 yards and a score.

Charlotte Latin 54, Asheville School 13:
Charlotte Latin ran its record to 4-0, heading into next week’s showdown with unbeaten Charlotte Christian. Hawks QB Daniel Jones completed 19-of-24 passes for 231 yards and four scores. He ran for another score. Latin coach Larry McNulty won his 237th career game. Asheville School fell to 0-4.

DOWN, Forest Hills: Proud program is 0-4 for the first time since 1973 after Friday’s 49-35 loss to Piedmont.

UP, Will Grier, Davidson Day: Now has 27 touchdown passes in four weeks.

UP, Forestview: Gastonia team upset No. 10 East Lincoln, a reigning N.C. state champ, 44-27. East Lincoln is ranked No. 1 in most N.C. 2A polls and had a 19-game win streak snapped.

Roundup

Davidson Day 64, Harrells Christian 14:
In a rematch of last season’s wild 104-80 state semifinal game, Davidson Day beats Harrells again -- but this time with a much better defensive performance. Davidson Day handed Harrells its first loss of the season as Florida-bound QB Will Grier led his team to a big win against a state championship favorite. Harrells fell to 3-1. Davidson Day is 4-0.

Mount Tabor 25, No. 5 Butler 19:
Mount Tabor ran out to a 25-0 lead against the young Bulldogs before Butler rallied. Butler had the ball, down a score in the fourth quarter, but threw an interception in its own territory. Butler (2-2) had won four straight games against non-Mecklenburg County competition and now faces a tough game at Richmond Senior next week.

No. 15 Central Cabarrus 45, Carson 20:
Central Cabarrus ran its record to 3-0 with an easy win Friday. Kenny Purvis led the team with 252 yards total offense and three touchdowns (one rushing, two receiving).

No. 6 South Point 49, Q Foundation 6: South Point held Q Foundation to 26 yards rushing in front of North Carolina coach Larry Fedora, who arrived in a helicopter just before kickoff. South Point QB Jaquan Brooks had 108 yards on five carries.

Rocky River 28, Hunter Huss 17: The Ravens overcame a slow start to rally and win in Gastonia. Rocky River managed only 21 yards total offense and one first down in the first half. The Ravens had more than 200 yards offense in the second half to improve to 3-1.

40: Byrnes QB Bentley Shuler completed 29 of 40 passes for 407 yards and three scores.
