Fayetteville's Kwe Parker aka The Insane Dunking Machine

In 26 years of covering high school basketball, I've seen a lot of great dunkers. For me, the best I've seen in person is Vince Carter. Gerald Henderson, now of the Hornets, and LeBron James were also pretty amazing in high school.

I once saw former Providence High and UNC star Antawn Jamison jump one foot inside the free throw line -- in a game -- and throw one down left-handed (Jamison is a rightie).

But there's a kid playing right now who will give any of them a run for their money.

Fayetteville's Kwe Parker impressed me catching alley-oops from teammate Dennis Smith as a 9th grader when Parker and Smith were teammates at Fayetteville's Trinity Christian High. I've seen Parker make some absolutely silly dunks in warm-ups before Trinity Christian games and I've seen him make a few in games that made you look at your neighbor and shake your head ("Did you see that?").

Smith, a 6-2 junior point guard, has gone onto become one of the nation's top 10 in his class and one of North Carolina's best three players, period. Parker has become one of the most famous players in his class because of his unique jumping ability. A high major Division I recruit, Parker will play at High Point Wesleyan this season, leaving Smith but joining another top national recruit, 6-9 junior Harry Giles.

Here is a new video of Parker dunking (the right-hander nearly touches the rim with his head before tossing in a left-handed tip dunk that would win many a dunk competition).

Cherryville's Trentavis Friday named N.C. Gatorade boys track athlete of the year

From staff reports

CHICAGO (June 20, 2014) — In its 29th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, today announced Trentavis Friday of Cherryville High School as its 2013-14 Gatorade North Carolina  Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year.  Friday is the first Gatorade North Carolina Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year to be chosen from Cherryville High School.

Friday was named All-Observer boys track athlete of the year last week.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the track, distinguishes Friday as North Carolina’s best high school boys track & field athlete.  Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year award to be announced in June, Friday joins an elite alumni association of state award-winners in 12 sports, including Ryan Hall (1999-01, Big Bear HS, Calif.), Meb Keflezighi (1993-94, San Diego HS, Calif.), Derek Jeter (1991-92, Kalamazoo HS, Mich.), Candace Parker (2001-02, Naperville Central HS, Ill.), Mark Sanchez (2004-05, Mission Viejo HS, Calif.) and Lolo Jones (1997-98, Roosevelt HS, Ia.).

The 6-foot-2, 165-pound senior won three individual state championships and anchored the winning 4x400-meter relay quartet at the Class 1A state meet this spring, leading the Ironmen to a second-place finish as a team. Friday took gold in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.59 seconds, the 200-meter dash in 20.95 and the 400-meter run in 47.87. The New Balance Nationals Indoor champion and the NBN meet indoor record-holder in both the 60 and 200, he also captured the 200-meter crown at this month’s New Balance Nationals Outdoor championships. Friday’s season-bests of 10.17 in the 100 and 20.33 in the 200 both rank as the nation’s No. 1 performances among prep competitors in 2014 at the time of his selection.

Friday has maintained a B average in the classroom. In addition to serving on the Cherryville High school yearbook and school newspaper staffs, he has volunteered locally for two years on behalf of the First Wesleyan Church’s feed-the-homeless initiative. He has also donated his time as part of his school’s morning-announcements team and has worked with special needs students at the Webb Street School.

“He’s worked hard and stayed healthy, and he’s just a special runner,” said Cherryville head coach Keith Fox. “He can do anything. He could go out and run a 1:54 in the 800 if we wanted him to. He put in a lot of time in the offseason, worked in the weight room. We knew he was capable of a season like this.”

Friday has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete in track and field on scholarship at Florida State University this fall.

Cleveland Jackson named boys basketball coach at Olympic High School

Olympic athletics director Ken Konstanty told the Observer Thursday that the school has named Cleveland Jackson as its new boys basketball coach. Jackson was one of more than 80 applicants to apply for the job after Ty Baumgardner resigned to take a similar job in Georgia.

Baumgarder led the Trojans to a 30-0 record and a N.C. 4A state title in 2012-13. In 10 seasons, Baumgardnerwas 229-63. In the past four seasons, Olympic was 109-9.

Jackson’s son, C.J., was the leading scorer for Baumgardner’s 2013-14 team, which finished 23-5. C.J. Jackson is a senior who will graduate next month.

“Coach Jackson’s basketball history, passion for the game and commitment to improve the lives of young men makes him a perfect fit,” Konstanty said. “He has a complete understanding of our program and a desire to continue the family tradition that has become Olympic basketball.”

Jackson played college ball at Georgia, and played professionally in South America. He was an assistant coach at Belmont Abbey last season and was an assistant at Mercer for seven years before that. Jackson also coached in high school for four years, producing 15 college players.

Hough boys basketball coach Justin Batts resigns; several coaching openings at Cornelius school

Hough athletics director Masanori Toguchi told the Observer Tuesday that Huskies boys basketball coach Justin Batts has resigned.

Batts was selected the Observer's coach of the year for its All-Lake Norman area boys team this year. Hough finished the season 22-6 and won the conference championship in the MECKA 4A, perhaps the toughest conference in North Carolina.

In the 2012-13, Batts led the Huskies to perhaps the school's biggest win, a N.C. 4A sectional championship win over heavily favored West Charlotte and then All-American center Kennedy Meeks to reach their first N.C. 4A Western Regional.

Next season, Hough is expected to return 6-8 forward Luke Maye, a high major Division I recruit. Maye made the All-Observer team for the second time this season.

Besides Batts, Toguchi said the school also had openings for girls basketball, softball, track and cross-country.

Olympic High athletics director Ken Konstanty had more than 40 candidates apply for the school’s head football job after longtime coach Barry Shuford resigned last December. Wednesday, Konstanty said he was “thrilled” to announce that former Vance and Winston-Salem Carver coach Keith Wilkes would replace Shuford at Olympic.

“We’re excited to get someone of a Shuford quality,” Konstanty said. “That’s what we were looking for. We’re confident coach Wilkes will be able to come in and our school won’t miss a bit. We’re hopeful he can take us to the next level.”

Konstanty said Wilkes will start working with the team this week. He likely won’t start working in the school until August.

Shuford coached at Olympic since 2007. His 2013 team was 7-5. After going 4-7 in his first season, Shuford’s next six teams produced no losing seasons.

Wilkes was hired at Vance in January of 2012 and coached the Cougars in the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The 2012 Vance team was 9-4. Vance was 6-6 last season after a 4-1 start. The Cougars lost their final three games and four of their last five. Vance High athletics director Carlos Richardson told the Observer that Wilkes and the school had a “mutual decision” to part ways after the 2013 season. Wilkes resigned in November, shortly after Vance’s season was over.

Wilkes, part of the 2011 class of the Winston-Salem/Forysth County High School Sports Hall of Fame, built quite a tradition at Winston-Salem Carver.

From 1992-2007, his teams were 139-62-1 with 11 conference titles and state championships in 1998 and 2003. Wilkes was 9-21 at Shiloh High in Snellsville, Ga., for three seasons before resigning and eventually landing at Vance.

In high school athletics, NCISAA basketball finals as good as it gets

High school athletes in North Carolina are awful lucky.

In a 26-year career at the Observer, I've been able to see high school sports championships in seven states and seen a few more while traveling. Nothing I've seen comes close to the job that the N.C. High School Athletic Association (public schools) and the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association (private schools) do with the state basketball championships each year.

Each event is the singular highlight of the prep season, along with the NCHSAA football finals. Due to the number of schools playing for finals, the NCHSAA divides its finals into two locations for basketball and three for football. The NCISAA, like today, packs them all into one gym.

That allows the fans to see all the top players and all the top teams. All of the NCISAA officials are on hand, from executive director Chuck Carter down to former coaches and athletics directors at the school level. In some ways, it's like a family reunion for the Independent Schools. And it doesn't hurt that the basketball is always phenomenal.

Time Warner Cable is broadcasting today's finals and from the packed gym to the players from other schools watching to the incredible decibel level, this is something special, something the participants will remember forever.

And that's what high school athletics should be all about.

CMS postpones Thursday's basketball games; full basketball, wrestling schedules

This week's major snow event is wreaking havoc with the high school winter sports schedules.

In Mecklenburg County, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are out Thursday and all athletic activities are canceled. That's pushed games scheduled for Thursday to Friday.

CMS athletics director Sue Doran said school is out Friday, those games would move to Saturday. Doran also games could get pushed to Monday if conditions don't improve.

CMS conference tournaments are scheduled to begin Monday, but if regular-season games get pushed back, the conference tournament scheduled would likely be altered.

Two local conference tournaments were scheduled this week. The MAC tournament, which began Monday, was scheduled to conclude at Covenant Day in Matthews. That tournament has been canceled. The SPAA tournament semifinals are scheduled for Friday at United Faith in southeast Charlotte.

A SPAA official told the Observer that if semifinal games cannot be played Friday, both semifinals and championship games would be played on Saturday.

The private school state playoffs begin next week and the playoff seeding meeting is Sunday.

Wrestling regional tournaments are also expected to begin Friday, including the 4A West regional at Hough High.

With the possibility that some areas may not be clear by Friday, the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association met via conference call on Tuesday and approved changes to aid schools in scheduling changes.

The NCHSAA, which frowns on Sunday events, will allow wrestling regionals to finish on Sunday, but is asking schools to make "every effort to avoid Sunday competition."

On Sunday, weigh-ins could not occur before noon and wrestling could not begin until 1 p.m.

In basketball, the NCHSAA will allow schools to play four games next week, with Friday being considered the “non-school” play date under the NCHSAA scheduling policies. Schools cannot play Saturday, but the extra playing date will allow schools to, say, make up a final regular-season game from this week and handle a 3-game conference tournament next week.

The NCHSAA state playoff basketball seeding will be done Saturday, Feb. 22, and all qualifiers must be submitted by member schools by 6 a.m. that morning.

Buzzer-beating half-court alley oop wins game, makes "SportsCenter" top 10

SouthLake Christian's Andrew Howard is probably having himself a pretty good week.

On Tuesday night, he took a half-court pass from teammate Miles Boone and threw down a sudden one-handed alley-oop dunk at the buzzer. SouthLake Christian beat Hickory Grove 61-59. Howard and his teams got mobbed by fans and Howard's dunk ended up No. 3 on ESPN's "SportsCenter" top 10.

And he did it on Senior Night.

SouthLake -- coached by former N.C. State legend Rodney Monroe -- improved to 16-7 overall and 11-4 in the Metrolina Conference. Howard ended the game with 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.

Former W. Charlotte/Harding basketball coach Gosnell White to retire from Marvin Ridge

Gosnell White, one of the winningest basketball coaches in Mecklenburg County history, will retire at the end of the season.

White, who coached the bulk of his high school career at Harding and West Charlotte, is currently at Union County's Marvin Ridge High. White started at Marvin Ridge in 2007.

His current team is 9-7 and plays rival Cuthbertson at home Friday.

In his career, White has won 533 games in 36 seasons. He coached at Harding before taking over at West Charlotte in the middle '90s. After winning more than 500 games and seven state championships under legendary coach Charles McCullough, the Lions program floundered after McCullough retired in 1994.

White took over after several other coaches had tried and returned West Charlotte to its previous dominant form. White's Lions won a Mecklenburg County public school-record eight straight conference championships from 1997-2004. His teams made five regional appearances. His 1998-99 West Charlotte team finished in the USA Today national poll top 10 and won the N.C. 4A state championship. That team is arguably the best public school team in N.C. history.

White has coached at Marvin Ridge since 2007.

Four players to be suspended for four games following Monday's Vance-A.L Brown girls basketball fight

Four girls basketball players at A.L. Brown and Vance High Schools will each be suspended four games following their actions in a fight that ended Monday's game between the schools.

During the third quarter, a player from Brown and a player from Vance dove for a loose ball. The players became entangled and a fight broke out. Vance athletics director Carlos Richardson stopped the game with about three minutes left in the third quarter.

Brown was declared the winner 40-32. After the fight was broken up Monday, Vance's boys defeated AL Brown 70-49.

On Tuesday, school and state officials reviewed video of the incident. N.C. High School Athletic Association commissioner Davis Whitfield told the Observer that two players from each team were ejected for fighting. Per NCHSAA rules, that will result in a four-game suspension.

"We intend to contact both schools," Whitfield said. "That's not the kind of behavior we need from either side. We'll discuss the importance of sportsmanship and proper behavior. We will definitely follow up on this."

Vance was scheduled to play rival Mallard Creek at home Tuesday night at 6. Brown was to play at Hough.

Fight stops Monday's A.L. Brown at Vance girls basketball game

Monday's A.L. Brown at Vance girls high school basketball game was stopped in the second half after several players from both teams became involved in a fight.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools athletics director Sue Doran said the game was stopped in the third quarter. A final score was reported to media outlets of A.L. Brown winning 40-32. It was Vance's seventh straight loss. Vance, which lost 66-48 at A.L. Brown on Dec. 17, is 2-15 overall and 0-10 in the MECKA 4A conference.

Vance is scheduled to play rival Mallard Creek at home Tuesday night at 6.

Brown is 6-12 overall and 2-8 in conference play. Monday's decision ended a six-game losing streak for the Wonders, who play at Hough Tuesday night.

Vance athletics director Carlos Richardson said the fight broke out after one player from each team dove for a loose ball. Richardson said after the incident, he made the decision to stop the game.

Doran said that game officials and athletics directors from both schools were reviewing film of the game Monday. The N.C. High School Athletic Association is also looking at the tape.

"There was an incident," Doran said. "A scuffle broke out and the game was stopped and not resumed in the third quarter. This morning, the NCHSAA, the basketball booking agent and ADs at both schools are viewing the game tape so that everyone involved can make sure exactly what happened and individuals will be held accountable that need to be held accountable."

The NCHSAA penalty for ejection is two games; for fighting, it's four games. CMS will double any ejection penalty. CMS will not double the fighting penalty, Doran said.

After the fight was broken up, Vance's boys defeated AL Brown 70-49.

Video of Gaston Day's miracle shot to beat Victory Christian

Friday night, Gaston Day beat Victory Christian with a double-overtime buzzer beater from Derek McKnight with four seconds left.

The win put Gaston Day back into the Southern Piedmont conference race.

Victory Christian and United Faith are tied for first place, one game ahead of Gaston Day. Victory Christian has one league game remaining, Friday at United Faith.

Gaston Day hosts United Faith Tuesday.

If Gaston Day beats United Faith and United Faith beats Victory, there's a three-way tie for first.

Here's two videos of the big shot.

Former Carolina Panther Brad Hoover named head football coach at Marvin Ridge

Former Carolina Panther fullback Brad Hoover is the new head football coach at Marvin Ridge.

Hoover will be the school's fourth football coach. Marvin Ridge, which opened in 2007, was 2-9 last season under Danny Bailey, who coached the Mavericks for one season.

Hoover coached last season for Union Academy, a small school also in Union County.  He led Union Academy to a 6-6 record, which tied for the best in school history.

Hoover, a former N.C. Shrine Bowl star in high school, played at Western Carolina. He became the school's No. 2 all-time leading rusher and was later inducted into Western Carolina's Hall of Fame.

Undrafted, Hoover was picked up as a free agent by Carolina in 2000 and became one of the franchise's more popular players during a 9-year career where he played in 149 regular-season or playoff games

Providence Day to "re-retire" the jersey of former UNC great and alumnus Reggie Clark Friday

During halftime of Friday’s game with rival Charlotte Country Day, Providence Day will retire former football star Reggie Clark’s No. 11 jersey. The jersey was retired in 1988, but the number was accidentally used recently.

Clark was all-state in football, basketball and baseball at Providence Day. He was drafted in the second round by Toronto. In football, Clark played running back and free safety. In 1986, he led coach Steve Shaughnessy’s team to a 9-1 record and the school’s first state championship.

Clark rushed for 4,820 career yards before playing football at North Carolina. After he graduated from college, Clark was a free agent pick by the New England Patriots. He played for several NFl teams, including San Diego, Pittsburgh and Jacksonville.

Clark said he was touched by the “re-retirement” of his jersey.

“Now,” he said, “my daughter can look at it hanging in her school and say, ‘Hey, daddy did something important. He did something special.’”

Scott Chadwick named head football coach at Myers Park

Former Marvin Ridge football coach Scott Chadwick has named as the new coach at Myers Park.

Chadwick will replace Scott Stein, who coached the Mustangs for one season. Stein missed part of the season on medical leave. Shon Kendall has been the Mustangs interim head coach.

Chadwick will take over from Kendall within the next two months.

Chadwick coached at Marvin Ridge from 2008-2012 and had a record of 41-20. His first team was 6-6. His next four all had winning records and his 2011 team set a school record with 10 wins.

Chadwick's teams at Marvin Ridge won three conferences titles and had a cumulative GPA of 3.37.

In 2010, Chadwick was named the Carolina Panthers High School Coach of the year, awarded to an area coach who has achieved excellence on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.

Chadwick has 15 years of head coaching experience and is a certified Physical Education and Exceptional Children’s teacher.

Chadwick is Myers Park's fourth head coach in six seasons. The Mustangs were 4-7 in 2013 and have had one winning season since 2005.

East Mecklenburg football coach Chris Williams resigns

East Mecklenburg High coach Chris Williams has resigned, Eagles athletics director Ec Little told the Observer.

Little said he hoped to name a replacement “as soon as possible.”

Williams coached two seasons at East and was 3-19. The Eagles will now have their fourth head coach since 2009, when Greg Hill led East Meck to an 8-6 record. Hill had back-to-back winning seasons in 2008 and ‘09. In the four subsequent years, the Eagles have gone 5-39.

Williams’ resignation creates the sixth head football coaching opening in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Garinger, Myers Park, Olympic, Vance and West Charlotte all have head coaching openings.

Monday, Mark Steele was hired as new coach at Lake Norman Charter.

In the Observer-area, former Maiden head coach Tom Brown is expected to come out of retirement and be named head coach at East Burke, where he will replace former Myers Park coach Jim Ruark. Sun Valley coach Paul Hall was replaced by Tad Baucom.

-- Other area schools with vacancies include East Rowan, Hunter Huss, Central Academy, Newton-Conover, Marvin Ridge and West Caldwell.
