RALEIGH-- Chloe Willietts of Winston-Salam R.J. Reynolds moved a step closer to her second state singles crown on Friday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women's tennis tournament at the Millbrook Exchange Park.
Willetts defeated Cary's Jamie Rogers 6-4, 6-2, in the semifinals and now will battle Raleigh Broughton's Maggie Kane in the singles final. Kane teamed with her sister Katie to win the doubles crown in 2010 and were runners-up last year
Last year's singles finalists, champion Hannah Templeton of Greensboro Page and runner-up McKayla Zupan of Wilmington Hoggard, won their opening round matches but each lost in the quarterfinals.
In doubles, Adrienne Overcash and Kara Summerford of Broughton will face Sammi Smith and Jordan Strickland of Cary Panther Creek in an all-Wake County state championship after an all-Wake County semifinal.
Finals are scheduled for 8:30 Saturday morning at the Millbrook Exchange Park, unless inclement weather forces play indoors at N.C. State.
CARY-- Defending singles champion Jordan Jackson of Mount Airy won a pair of matches on Friday to advance to the finals in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A women's tennis championships at the Cary Tennis Center.
Jackson is 25-4 on the season and is in the finals for the third straight year, finishing as runner-up in 2010, while Archer has a singles mark of 16-3.
Mount Airy advanced a pair of doubles teams to the semifinals, and the duo of Davi Barbour and Haley Thomas then marched into the finals with a tough straight set win over Monica Kellis and Brynn Hinson of East Montgomery in the semifinal round, 7-5, 6-4.
Barbour and Thomas will play Libby Fowler and Brooke Herlocker of Misenheimer Gray Stone Day for the doubles state crown.
Action is scheduled to start at nine o'clock Saturday morning. If inclement weather occurs, matches will start at 8 am indoors at North Carolina State University.
