Kenny Burr is the new boys basketball coach at Gaston Day School, taking the job after Eric Davis had a change of heart.
Davis, the former successful coach at Hopewell High, accepted the job last month but changed his mind over the Memorial Day weekend. He will stay at West Brunswick High in Shallotte.
Burr is a former director of basketball operations at Winthrop. He was there from 2008-2012. In the spring, he coached the 17-and-under Upward Stars AAU team. The team was 28-4.
“Kenny is an oustanding young coach that relates extremely well with kids,” said Thomas Ryan, program director for the Upward Stars and head boys basketball coach at Dorman (SC) High. “He has a strong basketball mind and loves working with kids."
Burr will teach physical education at Gaston Day.

NW Cabarrus' Corey Seager named NC Gatorade baseball player of the year
From Gatorade media release
CHICAGO (May 30, 2012) — In its 27th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPNHS, today announced Corey Seager of Northwest Cabarrus High School as its 2011-12 Gatorade North Carolina Baseball Player of the Year.
Seager is the first Gatorade North Carolina Baseball Player of the Year to be chosen from Northwest Cabarrus High School.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Seager as North Carolina’s best high school baseball player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year award announced in May, Seager joins an elite alumni association of past state baseball award winners, including Derek Jeter (1991-92, Kalamazoo HS, Mich.), Roy Halladay (1994-95, Arvada West HS, Colo.), David Price (2003-04, Blackman HS, Tenn.), Chipper Jones (1989-90, Bolles School, Fla.), Derek Lee (1992-93, El Camino HS, Calif.) and John Lester (2001-02, Bellarmine Prep, Wash.).
The 6-foot-4, 205-pound senior shortstop batted .519 with 10 home runs and 37 RBI this past season, leading the Trojans (23-5) to the second round of the Class 3A state tournament. A returning All-American as named by Perfect Game USA, Louisville Slugger and Collegiate Baseball,
Seager stole 13 bases while producing a 1.062 slugging percentage and .664 on-base percentage. In nine games for the 2010 USA Baseball 16-and-Under National Team, he batted .514 with a home run and 12 RBI, earning All-Tournament honors in leading his countrymen to a gold
medal at the Pan-American Games.
Seager has maintained a 4.05 weighted GPA in the classroom. A member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Future Farmers of America, the National Beta Club and the Athletes Who Share Unselfish Moments (AWSUM) Club, he has donated his time locally as a youth baseball
instructor, on behalf of the Muscular Dystrophy Association and as a motivational speaker at a children’s hospital.
“He’s one of the greatest players—if not the best—to ever come out of this county,” said Derek Shoe, head coach at rival Concord High. “With that title, he wasn’t pitched to very often, but he never showed any frustration. He’s just an all-around great kid and one that we all wish we had on our team. From the outside, it looked like he was not only their best player, but also their best person.”
Seager has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball on scholarship at the University of South Carolina this fall, but is projected as an early round selection in next month’s Major League
Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Olympic basketball star to transfer to Findlay Prep
Olympic High basketball star Allerik Freeman will play his senior year at Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada, a suburb of Las Vegas.
Findlay Prep head coach Micahel Peck confirmed that Freeman, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound junior, would be leaving Charlotte and heading west for his senior year of high school. Freeman initially tweeted “Findlay Prep bound” on his Twitter account Wednesday afternoon.
Freeman and Olympic coach Ty Baumgardner did not return calls to the Observer.
ESPN ranks Freeman the nation’s No. 13 overall recruit in the class of 2013 and No. 5 at his position. ESPN has ranked Freeman as high as No. 9 nationally. He was a first team All Charlotte Observer and Associated Press all-state pick this season. He has narrowed his potential college choices to Duke, Kansas, Ohio State, Villanova and UCLA.
Freeman averaged 17.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.3 steals at Olympic last season, helping the Trojans to a 28-2 record and a second straight appearance in the N.C. 4A Western regional tournament.
At Findlay, he will join a team that has won three of the past four ESPN National High School Invitational tournaments. Last season, the Pilots finished 32-1 and averaged 93.8 points per game. It won its games by more than 30 points.
In five seasons under coach Peck, Findley Prep is 157-8, including 65-0 at home and it has produced six McDonald’s All Americans.
“Findlay is kind of like the Oak Hill of the West,” ESPN national recruiting analyst Dave Telep said. “It’s one of those places that a lot of high level kids in the last five years have opted to attend. Allerik’s a high level, high major basketball player and he’s going to a place where he’s not going to be the only one. I don’t know enough about it, but his reasoning probably includes playing with and against other high level guys on a daily basis.”
Freeman is the second player to leave Olympic, following shooting guard Austin Dasent, who will enroll at Charlotte’s Northside Christian private school next fall as a junior.

Victory Christian girls win 2A private school state track title
Victory Christian coach John Pratt challenged his girls to score 200 points.
They didn’t get there, but they did win another state title, their third straight and fourth in five years by scoring 184 points. Cary Christian was a distant second with 83.
"This year our slogan was, 'Don’t run from the workout, run to it,'" said Pratt, who has led Victory to seven overall state titles in boys (2008, 2009, 2010) and girls since taking over in 2008. "It's not me, I just try to motivate. It’s the kids. This one was special, because everybody came out and worked hard."
Leading Victory were Courtney Thomas, Kierra Davis, Mictasha Mickle and Kianna Goodson and Tyreon Gaddis.
Thomas won the 100 (12.59), 200 (26.74), and teamed with Tiffany Martin, Onesti Barnett, Jordan Osborne and Bobbi Mayfield to win the 400 relay (53.74) and Martin, Mickle, and Spring Williams to win the 800 relay (1:47.83). Mickle won the 400 (1:00.67) and was second in the 100 (13.07) and 200 (26.79), Davis won the triple jump (33-2.5) and high jump (5-2), and Gaddis was second in the 400 (1:01.22) and triple jump (32-0.75).
Westchester Country Day won its second straight boys title, 118-94 over Victory Christian. Davidson Day was fourth (70) and Gaston Day was seventh (34).
Area boys' winners were: Davidson Day’s Jordan Brown in the 100 (10.82) and 200 (21.79) and Ricky Smith in the shot put (43-8.5) and discus (120-9). Brown also teamed with Miles Boone, Jordan Young and Aaron Seward to win the 800 relay (1:31.82) and Victory Christian’s Josh Harris, Javaris Caldwell, Jacob Sims and Avery Walker won the 400 relay(44.81).

Berry win N.C. 3A boys track championship
PROFFITT LEADS NORTH BUNCOMBE TO NARROW WIN IN WILD NCHSAA STATE 3-A WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD MEET;
BERRY ACADEMY CAPTURES MEN'S 3-A TITLE
GREENSBORO -- It went right down to the last event on Friday in a wild chase for the team title in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A women's track and field championships.
Seven teams were within four points of the lead at the Irwin Belk Track at North Carolina A&T entering the four by 400 meter relay, but when it was over North Buncombe had rallied to slip into first place.
Led by Sage Proffitt, the meet's Most Outstanding Performer, North Buncombe scored 34 points to 30 for second-place Fayetteville Westover. There was a three-way tie for third among Wilson Fike, Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons and Waxhaw Marvin Ridge with 29 each, and then Charlotte Catholic and Chapel Hill tied for sixth, just six points back, with 28 points.
Proffitt ran the anchor leg on the four by 400 relay team which finished fourth and secured the team title for North Buncombe. She also won the pole vault, clearing 11-6, and placed third in the 800.
A total of 55 schools scored in the women's meet.
Nyshedra Brown of West Craven won both the 100 and the 200 and eclipsed the 3-A standard in the 100 meters by a mere .02 of a second, recording a time of 11.77 seconds. Ariel Davis of Northern Guilford set a new state 3-A record in the women's 110 high hurdles at 14.39 seconds.
In men's competition, Charlotte's Berry Academy, buoyed by winning three relays and getting individual championships from Cameron Hudson in the 100 and Larry Gibson in the 400, grabbed the team crown. Berry had 65 points to 47 points for runner-up Northern Guilford in winning its second consecutive state title as it won the 2-A crown last year before moving into the 3-A ranks.
Hudson was the meet's Most Outstanding Performer award as he helped Berry to the title. Besides winning the 100, he was second in the long jump, ran the lead leg on the victorious four by 100 relay team and was the anchor on the state champion four by 400 relay squad.
Jacksonville White Oak finished third with 41 points, followed by defending 3-A champ Fayetteville Douglas Byrd with 38 and Wilson Fike with 32. A total of 55 teams tallied points in the men's championships.
Jacksonville's Wesley Tucker was a double winner, taking first place in both hurdle events, and Fike's Josh King took top honors in the high jump and triple jump.

Providence girls soccer upsets Grimsley, reaches 4A quarterfinals
Providence High girls soccer coach Tim Long said he didn’t talk to his team much about Greensboro Grimsley before his team played in Greensboro in the third round of the N.C. 4A playoffs Thursday.
He didn’t talk about Grimsley’s No. 7 state ranking or the fact that it had lost only once all season, or that Grimsley had won 12 straight matches.
“We just concentrated on ourselves,” Long said.
After falling behind 1-0 early, Providence got first half goals from Logan Vitale and Amelia Melching and made them stand up in the second half with a stellar defensive performance.
Now, Providence (17-4-1) gets a third matchup with Southwestern 4A conference No. 1 seed Ardrey Kell (18-2-1) Saturday in the N.C. 4A quarterfinals.
Ardrey Kell won 2-1 earlier this season, scoring twice in the final seven minutes, Long said. In the second meeting, Ardrey Kell scored in the waning minutes of overtime to win 1-0.
“The girls are really excited,” Long said. “We like our chances.”
Fmr Hickory Grove coach Jim Rhodes is new basketball coach at Porter Ridge High
Jim Rhodes from Hickory Grove is the new boys basketball coach at Porter Ridge. Rhodes has been head coach at Hickory Grove for seven years and was junior varsity coach at Independence for two years before that.
At Porter Ridge, Rhodes replaces Jay Fitts, who resigned to take a coaching position at Forest Hills. Fitts coached Porter Ridge for three seasons.
“Jim had a good college playing career in the state of Kansas and was once third in the nation in 3-point shooting,” Porter Ridge athletics director Bill Rogers said. “He’s a very knowledgeable basketball person and he’s got the right amount of enthusiasm, personality and charisma. You know the student-athletes really like him and he’ll bring right amount of discipline along with the enthusiasm.”
