The top eight spots remained the same in the Observer’s Sweet 16 football poll as teams get ready for the postseason Friday.
But there was plenty of movement below that.
Two new teams join the poll. Mooresville (9-2) is back in, at No. 13, after winning its sixth straight game Friday night, a 37-21 win over Lake Norman.
South Caldwell (10-1) is ranked for the first time this season, at No. 16. The Spartans lost their season-opener, 25-14 Aug. 19 at Freedom, but have won 10 straight. In the streak, South Caldwell has allowed 5.4 points per game while scoring 46 per game.
Former No. 15 Freedom (10-1), which will not make the playoffs because of violating NCHSAA rules for fighting, fell out of the poll. The Patriots season is over. West Rowan, the three-time N.C. 3A champ, jumped three spots to No. 9.
Independence dropped one spot to No. 10 after losing 38-26 to No. 2 Butler in a game that was closer than the score, and Olympic fell two spots, to No. 12, after losing 55-20 to No. 3 Charlotte Catholic.

West Rowan football coach Scott Young suffers heart attack, plans to coach Friday
West Rowan football coach Scott Young woke up Monday night at 11:48 with what he said was the worst pain you could imagine in his chest. He was having a heart attack.
Young jumped in his truck and drove to Rowan Regional Medical Center, where doctors said he had a completely blocked artery and performed surgery to insert a stent inside the artery to open it up and allow blood to flow through again.
"Last Thursday, I felt a little mild pain in the chest," Young said. "But I went to the football game (last Friday) and went to my son's baseball game on Sunday. I felt fine. (Monday) night, that all changed."
West Rowan principal Jamie Durant said Joe Nixon, the school's offensive line coach, would take over the team while Young is out. But Young, whose team has won three straight N.C. 3A state championships, doesn't plan to be out long. He said he hoped to get out of the hospital Wednesday and to be at the Falcons' game Friday at West Iredell.
West Rowan (8-2, 5-0 North Piedmont 3A) leads West Iredell (6-3, 4-1) and Statesville (5-5, 4-1) by a game heading into Friday's regular-season finale.
"I'm good now and trying to get some rest," Young said. "We've got a big game Friday. It'll be a challenge for us because (West Iredell is) so good at receiver and we're so young at (defensive back). So if the doctor tells me I ain't good, I won't go. If he says I have his blessing, I'll go be in the press box Friday night."

Albemarle, Crest join Sweet 16 (and Meck County football standings)
Traditional powers Albemarle and Crest are back in the Sweet 16 as we head into the final week of the regular season.
Rock Hill Northwestern (6-3) and Salisbury (8-2) fell out of the poll this week, opening up slots for Albemarle’s Bulldogs and Crest’s Chargers. Also, 4A Olympic moved up one spot to No. 10 after rallying from 14 points down in the second half to beat Berry 41-34. Olympic plays at No. 3 Catholic Friday.
Albemarle, the two-time reigning N.C. 1AA champion, was ranked in the preseason, but dropped out after losing 9-7 in its season opener to West Stokes, a 2A team. West Stokes is now 10-0. Since that loss, Albemarle has won nine straight games. Two have been relatively close: a 21-14 win at 3A Mount Pleasant and a 27-14 win over 1A West Montgomery.
In the past four weeks, however, Albemarle has outscored opponents 195-9 with two shutouts. Albemarle plays traditional rival South Stanly (8-2, 5-1) for the Yadkin Valley championship Friday.
Crest, which got to the N.C. 3AA championship game last season, started this year 1-2, but has won seven straight games since then. The Chargers (8-2, 5-0) will play No. 4 South Point (9-0, 5-0) for the Big South 3A championship Friday.

Charlotte Christian's Rooks impressive at adidas Phenom Basketball Showcase
The 8th annual N.C. Phenom 150 camp in Winston-Salem Saturday had 216 players from five states participating. In the past players like P.J. Hairston (UNC), Jackson Simmons (UNC), Anthony Gill (South Carolina), Deuce Bello (Baylor) and John Cannon (Georgia) have attended the camp and gotten national recognition from a bevy of scouts.
One of the top performers this year was Charlotte Christian junior Patrick Rooks, a 6-3 combo guard who has committed to Clemson. The left-hander has been known for his shooting but has really worked to improve his ball-handling skills.
"Before the event, Rooks was primarily known as a shooting guard, but the talented Rooks has worked hard in the off season on his ball handling and passing ability," said event organizer Rick Lewis. "He has really elevated his game and has become a better all around player. He will not be known just as a shooter anymore."
Two other hot prospects at the event were 6-6 sophomores Cody and Caleb Martin of Davie County High in Mocksville. Both have several ACC offers and showed off good size and a good overall skill set.
Lewis felt that Rockbridge (VA) 6-0 junior guard Andrew Rowsey had the best overall camp. Known as an undersized shooting guard last season, Rowsey worked on his point guard skills and demanded the ball last weekend.
"He was excellent in dribble penetration and kicking out to open teammates and definitely made his teammates better," Lewis said. "Throughout the day, he was constantly knocking down jumpers and made an equal impression on the defensive end of the floor. He accepted all challenges and was one of the favorites by all the scouting services in attendance."
This year's camp again attracted a bevy of recruiting gurus: Jason Jordan of ESPN High School; Clark Francis of Hoop Scoop; Corey Cooper and Kerry Willis of Courtcred.com; Jacey Zimbal of NC State Rivals; Mike Talbot of Starhooopers; Thom Jones of TJ Recruiting; Jonathan Watford of Hoop Scout; Patrick Stanwood of Hoop Masters; CJ Watson of Premo Hoops; Joshusa Capers of Coast 2 Coast; Rising Starz; and Phenom Hoop Report.
Francis, Cooper, Watford and Willis all returned for the middle school event Sunday
Ones in bold were there for Sunday too.
Other top performers:
Andrew White, 6-6 Senior G, The Miller (Va) School: Smooth jumper with a great dribble pull up and college ready body
Chuck Ogbodo, 6-11 junior center, High Point Christian: Long athletic star getting major college interst from ACC schools.
Tyrek Coger, 6-8 junior center, Raleigh Upper Room: Decommitted from Missouri; showed off "soft" hands and dribble drills from the high post.
Jaylan Robertson, 6-0 sophomore guard, Clayton: Transferred to Raleigh Word of God, scoring point guard
Kovacevic Dusn, 6-9 freshman, Rabun Gap: Perhaps biggest surprise of camp. Showed off 3-point range and ball handling ability. He's one to watch.
Gejuan Long, 6-5 junior wing, Winston-Salem Mount Tabor: Athletic wing who attacked the basket.
Harry Giles, 6-6, 8th grader, Winston-Salem: Could be the future of N.C. Basketball. Dominated the middle school players (5-8th grade) on Sunday. Great around the rim but also wonderful passer, rebounder and finisher. Scary good this young.
Others:
Diante Balwin, 5-11, HP Christian
Mark Pollock, 6-7, Charlotte Catholic
Jackson Kent, 6-6, HP Christian;
6'5 Sophomore Dominque Kelmar-Poto of Dunn, NC
6'5 junior Matthew Madigan of Winston-Salem Reagan
6'3 senior JT Miller of Clinton, NC
6'3 Freshman Muhammad Muhammad of Durham Riverside
6'1 Freshman PG Brian Thornton of Chapel Hill HS 6'10 senior Thor Emilsson of Forsyth Country Day in Winston-Salem, NC

Was Butler sleepwalking? Thoughts on A. Kell, West Meck, Mallard Creek and Hough
-- I’m not sure there’s a better 4-3 team in the state than Ardrey Kell. In the past three weeks, the Knights have beaten one top 10 team (Independence) and had a lead on another (Butler) with two minutes to play.
No. 2 Butler rallied for a 43-40 win Thursday with a pretty last-ditch drive that fans will talk about for awhile, but Ardey Kell scored the most points on Butler in three years and nearly pulled off the year’s biggest upset.
And Ardrey Kell’s no fluke. Defensive end Romeo Okwara, I’ve been saying for weeks, is the area’s best defensive player. Quarterback Jonah Duggan gets 100 yards rushing nearly every week and tailback Quay Gilmore is a big play guy. This is not a team you want to play in the first round of the playoffs. The Knights are physical and tested. They’re also not afraid of anybody.
-- May not be a better 3-5 team in the area than West Meck. Coach Jeff Caldwell’s team lost to No. 12 Berry 21-19 Sept. 30 and nearly upset No. 11 Olympic Thursday before losing 20-19. With two winnable conference games with East Gaston (3-5) and Garinger (0-8) left on the schedule, the Hawks could get into position for a decent playoff seed.
-- After seeing Butler a few times, I kind of felt the two-time reigning state champions were kind of sleep walking through the regular-season and waiting for the playoffs. I’ve seen the same type of pattern from Mecklenburg County’s previous two dominant teams, Tom Knotts-led squads at West Charlotte and Independence.
-- I think you can cue the “Star Wars” Death Star music now, though. I think the Bulldogs woke up on the final drive of the Ardrey Kell game. It was amazing to see how precise a team could be, when they needed to be, after looking a little lackadaisical for the first 46 minutes of the game.
-- In four conference games, Mallard Creek has allowed 23 points. The Mavericks have shut out two of their past three opponents. They’ve not been tested at all since beating Butler 28-20 on Aug. 19. Will it matter in November? This is the state’s most talented team and the Mavericks are stocked for the next three years. But they’ll need to find ways to stay focused for the rest of the regular season, and probably the first two weeks of the playoffs, too.
-- Second-year Hough is second place in the I-Meck, tied with Mooresville. How? Defense. Hough’s allowed 68 points in its conference games. That is well behind Mallard Creek (23 allowed) but 15 fewer than anybody else.

Mallard Creek's Harbison commits to Minnesota
Mallard Creek wide receiver Jamel Harbison committed to Minnesota, coach Mike Palmieiri said.
Harbison has 21 receptions for 372 yards and seven touchdowns and is among the top 10 in receptions and receiving touchdowns in the Observer's 131-school coverage area in North and South Carolina. Scout.com, a national recruiting website, lists him a 3-star recruit. Harbison, 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, runs a 4.5 second 40.
Harbison and the Mavericks (6-0) play North Mecklenburg Thursday.

Olympic Trojans jump into the Sweet 16
Welcome Olympic to the Sweet 16.
Since losing to nationally-ranked Butler on Aug. 26, coach Barry Shuford’s team has won five straight games.
The Trojans (6-1, 2-0 MEGA 7 3A/4A) are averaging 43.6 points in their wins and have won two conference games by a combined score of 90-6.
Olympic is tied with Charlotte Catholic (6-0, 2-0) in the conference standings for second place behind No. 12 Berry (6-1, 3-0).
-- Sun Valley (3-3) was upset by Anson Senior (3-4) Friday and had its three-game win streak snapped. The Spartans fell out of the poll this week.
-- Rock Hill Northwestern lost for the second time this season and dropped to No. 13. That allowed for several teams to move up. Independence also moved back into the top 10 after an easy win at Providence Friday.

Hough beat rival North Meck behind Campbell's big day
Jackson Campbell ran 22 times for 122 yards and a touchdown as second-year Hough beat rival North Mecklenburg 28-16 on the road Friday night.
Hough (3-4, 2-1 I-Meck 4A) vaulted into second-place in the league standings and the Huskies have won two of three games.
Hough quarterback Josh Stilley threw for 68 yards and a score and wasn't sacked. Hough ran up 286 all purpose yards.
On defense, the Huskies got big performances from Jared Sobo (11 tackles, 1 pass bat down), Connor Millikin (9 tackles, 1 interception, 1 bat down) and Brandon Mobley (8 tackles, 1 INT)
Hough plays at West Charlotte (3-4, 2-1) Thursday in a battle of second place teams.
