NFL's Panthers to donate $50,000 worth of training equipment to Olympic High

Olympic High is getting a $50,000 weight room makeover courtesy of the Carolina Panthers.

Four high schools in the Carolinas were selected to win $250,000 worth of weight training equipment that the Panthers are donating through a special grant program. The equipment was previously used in the Panthers’ strength and conditioning program. The other winners were South Stanly, Durham Riverside and Summerton Scott’s Branch.

High schools in North and South Carolina had the opportunity to apply for the four weight room packages, which includes bench presses, squat racks and plate as well as specialized equipment. More than 70 schools applied and the selection process was based on a variety of factors, including the state of the school’s football program, community involvement, funding sources and demonstrated need.

Olympic football coach Barry Shuford and trainer Alicia Harvey handled Olympic’s application and Trojans athletics director Ken Konstanty said the school was excited to win. The Panthers will present the equipment to the school Tuesday at 2:45 p.m. Panther cheerleaders, some players will attend along with team mascot Sir Purr and Olympic’s players and cheerleaders.

“It’s a big deal for us,” Konstantly said. “The Panthers organization has helped out a lot of people and it’s our turn and we love it. It’s taken our weight room to the next level and given us an opportunity to make our kids better, and that’s what education is all about.”

This is against CMS rules, you cannot donate something one school, if others are not getting the same thing. CMS confiscated the PTA paid for activity bus. CMS would not allow a family to donate a ballet bar to one school without donating another one to another school.

Time to divy up these funds to every school in the system.

Ghoul, since when? PTA's buy things for their schools all the time. Our PTA just bought 15 smartboards. I'm pretty sure they didn't buy any for all the other schools in CMS. Get your facts straight before you comment.

I agree with Jay. Ghoul sounds like a bitter person because his school did not win. I teach at Olympic and can assure you this equipment is needed and the kids will appreciate it a great deal. Gouhl, do not go away mad, just go away.

I am so happy for the Olympic family. This is something the kids will remember for the rest of their lives. I know it's only equipment BUT, this is huge. My nephew attends Olympic and plays football so I am extra happy for them. Thanks Carolina Panthers!

Actually all of you are wrong and Ghoul is right. CMS is very biased toward all for one and one for all. That's why none of the INDY vs Butler games have never been broadcasted on ESPN even though both teams were previously ranked nationally. Every top 25 high school teams in the nation are broadcasted on ESPNU but CMS said no way!

Under Armor tried to sponsor Mallard Creek for the past two years but CMS said "unless you have it for the other high schools we cannot allow it". Olympic most likely needs it more than Garinger anyway right?

I remember Nike wanted to redo the Indy football stadium and weight room and CMS said nope unless you do it for all! I agree with that.... Mallard Creek recruits now lol, just imagine if they had a sponsor like under armor!

While we are on the topic, why does CMS allow artificial turf at some schools but not put it at all? This allows some teams an advantage because they can practice everyday....not fair.

The new Panthers weight room has a large panther symbol on the ceiling, perhaps NOW Richardson will put the same emblem on the center of the field instead of the NFL symbol. Yes, we get it, the football team is part of the NFL. Now show your support, Richardson, for the fans paying the bills and give us the panther logo which represents the team we support on the field.

I believe because it is a grant and everyone could apply is why it can go to Olympic, because CMS does have at donation restriction in place.

It is about time that self-promoter (Shuford) and Harvey actually facilitated something positive for the kids instead of just carrying on their love affair on CMS' dime.

It would be nice if we are all happy for the school and that one of the grants went locally. There is a difference between a grant that everyone can apply for and a sponsorship or donation that is only offered to one school.
Teachers throughout CMS benefit from grants they apply for yearly. Some classroom projects would not be possible without winning grants.
It sad that we can just be happy that one of our CMS schools in getting this as opposed to all the grants going to non-local schools.
