It is really interesting how the NC side continues to recycle the same Coaches and not give some of the fresh innovative guys a chance to get this squad together. (Hardin brothers, Newsome, King(hillside). Come on new blood please...

Amazing that one of the worst coaches in youth sports (Shuford) is selected for this crew. The foulest mouth and worst role model for youth sports is "rewarded" for this type of behavior ???

Look at all the kids that got signed this year on Shufords team - zero. These are the same kids that played and won their conference as juniors last year. It takes the efforts of the coach and the parents to get a kid signed these days. Just a warning for future Olympic players and parents don't depend on the coach - its all on you.

First of all you have to have talent/skills to be offered a scholarship.Second, grades do matter.Third, good character, personality and family are important too. Finally, if your player has these traits, you as a parent can do all the work that is necessary to get your child a scholarship. Don't blame the coach if your not willing do the work necessary to help you child.

I too can't beleive Shuford is going to be a Shrine Bowl coach ! I worked the chains and saw first hand what the some of the previous posts said. Foul mouth, terrible role model, and negative attitude . I wondered why he never stayed anywhere too long ....now I know ! Certainly there are more deserving coaches !

Barry Shuford does not deserve to be on the staff. 1st of all, he does absolutely nothing to get his players in to college. Every player that went on to play college ball had to work extremely hard to get their names out. Next, he was not the reason they won the conference last year, that was mainly Tetters doings. The only good thing he has done for the program is getting better stuff and making sure he looks good.

Shuford has won at places that others failed. Cherryville, Garinger, and Parkwood. He built Butler from a new school to playing in the regional semifinal in five seasons and then passed the reins to his protege Mike Newsome. Took over an Olympic program that was left in shambles. Whether you like him or not, the guy can coach. He will do good on the organization and short week of in person coaching. btango

Newsome was an assistant coach in the 2009 Shrine Bowl.

I expect King will be on the staff next year.

None of the coaches on this squad have coached in the Shrine Bowl previously except the head coach. In order to be the head coach you must serve as an assistant. btango

I saw Olympic play. Their best players this year were underclassmen. There were no real standouts in the senior class. That is why few of them will be playing football next year.

Shuford has no business working with young people, much less getting an honor like this. He has indeed won at some tough places to do so, but at what cost? Football skills notwithstanding, what do his players learn that they can really use in future life, such as respect for authority, respect for opponents, honorable conduct, and self-control? He exemplifies NONE of these things to the youngsters who play for him.

Several years ago when he was at Butler, his team was beating a hapless Garinger squad about 50-0 at halftime. The Garinger coach asked for a running clock the second half; but Shuford refused. Butler ended up winning about 75-0.
(and people used to accuse Knotts of running up the score).

Who selects the coaches for the Shrine Bowl? It looks to me like it may be Al "just win baby" Davis. This is a sad day for high school football in NC.

Lots of kids playing 1-AA college ball are not the 'stand-outs' but the good, solid, consistent players that love the game. Looks like every school had a few, except the MEGA 7 schools- it's a shame none of them have a mentor that makes sure they do what is necessary to keep the dream alive.

Yeah, he doesn't look like a mentor; from the Observer:

Olympic coach Barry Shuford was ejected in the second quarter after drawing a pair of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.

Olympic had a very small senior class that was lazy and had shameful GPA's, thats the only reason no one signed. Its not Shufords job to get these kids signed, its the kids and the parents job, but too many depend on CMS to raise their kids for them.

In that Garinger game Shuford played his JV players in the second half. Garinger did not play a JV game the night so Shuford let his JV players get playing time in the second half.

You credibility is shot. I understand why you are hiding behind that anonymous post.

The Hardin boys will get their opportunities in the future. They are young and their are a lot of good experienced coaches in NC that have not had an opportunity to coach in the shrine bowl. I predict at least one of the Hardins will be a head coach in the shrine bowl if they continue to coach until they retire.

Sorry about my use of Their vs There...

I will address two other posts in this post

Now to the comment about MEGA 7 conference and players going to the next level Division 1 that is... yet more ignorance.

Worst youth coach in North Carolina? Shuford has a winning record so he certainly is not the worst. As stated above, he has won at places others could not

For the record Shuford needs five more wins at Olympic to become the all-time winnest coach. He is currently 4-games behind Scott Braswell and Maurice Flowers. Shuford is also second behind Braswell for percentage of wins.

I cannot debate you on Shuford’s mouth. I can say that without question you are incorrect in saying he is the foulest mouth. And in fact this season he was much-much calmer. Yes he rides officials. That is because Shuford expects you to do your job… yeah I kind of figure a couple of you anonymous posters are officials.

Now concerning the ejection in the Mallard Creek game... You had to be there to know what happened. I was yards away from it. First of all something was allowed that should not have been. Four of the officials had been reported by Shuford in the past AND they had been punished. For example, the extra down game against Sun Valley; that crew was not allowed to work the last game of the season or the playoffs in ‘09. Two from that crew called that game. Whoever assembled this crew should be fired putting those officials on the same field with Shuford in a playoff game

The white hat told the wing official if you hear anything more out of him tell me and I’ll eject him. The white hat did not go over to Shuford and warn him etc. He made no effort to mediate the situation at all. I know exactly what I heard; I also know the body language and voice that went with it. I was actually shocked to hear it. The Mallard Creek chain crew heard it and a few other people on the sidelines heard it. None of the coaches heard it as the ball was inside the 25-yard line.

Shuford had right to be upset with the officiating in that game. No it didn’t cost Olympic the game, not even close and we all know that. However, the officiating was MUCH better in the second half after Shuford was gone. The officials were not against Olympic in this game, they were against Shuford and it all to obvious.

Want an example? One flag was thrown as the ball was snapped. That means the official saw something pre-snap because it takes time to pull the flag and throw it. It looked like maybe one of the linemen had moved. The call? Chop block. How do you call Chop Block before the ball is even snapped? That call is one of the calls that pushed Shuford over the edge from what I recall. Like I said, he had right to be upset. He had right to say the things he said. And the funny thing is that none of was really “foul”. I’ve heard worse language out of the Charlotte Catholic coaching staff than what got Shuford ejected.

Now I share this only to show that these officials targeted Shuford. Shuford told me before the game that it was going to be a bad night for him because of the four officials on the crew.

Yes there is another side to the story.

Lastly… the recruiting of players…

I expect maybe this is brought up by a parent of one of the players. What I am about to write is not written with any amount of Joy.

At Olympic the players that actually had the skill and or size to play at the next level; it is my understanding that many of them had poor GPAs. Outstanding players can get by with poor GPAs and get their D1 ride. The next level of players need more… they need good grades they need community activities etc. Because there are a LOT of players that fall just below that D1 line you need to have something more to set you apart. Since there are so many players to choose from in this next level things like grades become an even bigger issue. And just getting by with a 2.0 GPA and poor SAT is not going to get you a ride anywhere. In fact you are going to find it hard to go D2 or even D3.

One of the biggest shocks to me was how the senior players did not play as well their senior year as they did in their junior year. You want to kill your recruiting opportunities? That is exactly how you do it. Recruiters like to see continual improvement and development of a player, not a decline.

Olympic has more D1 caliber talent in their younger players.

I do know that Shuford works to get kids into College. However, any coach that recommends a player is putting his reputation on the line. So the coaches don’t push every player on their team to recruiters. If an ACC or SEC recruiter should happen to come by the school, the head coach is not going to pull a player out of class to talk to them if he knows that player doesn’t have a snowballs chance in hell of making the team. He would look foolish. This applies to any recruiter that comes by.

Recruiters find the kids many ways. Sometimes coaches at other schools will mention players. Recruiters talk to each other; they pull stats and read articles etc. There simply wasn’t an attraction at Olympic this past season in the senior class. And as soon as recruiter finds out a player has poor grades they will go cold on them unless they are exceptional players.

Coaches try to find places that players can fit in. However, it is the responsibility of the parents to work on this as well. Coaches have very limited time and can only do so much. Since my son was not one of these exceptional athletes I had to work to him his offers. And the first thing that caught the Furman, Davidson, Lehigh etc attention was his grades. When they learned he had good grades, yes they wanted to see highlight film. You send poor GPA information to a school and a highlight tape they are not going to take long to eliminate you.

With that said, Shuford has done a very good job of getting players into College. I know about the work he put in to try and get players that he felt deserved it a ride. But he and other coaches can only do so much. So any parent reading this at any school… you have to do the work, you have to stay on top of things. You have to get your kid and his/her grades inline.
