Newton-Conover leads at wrestling state finals
GREENSBORO-- Winston-Salem Parkland moved closer to its fifth consecutive state championship in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state wrestling championships on Friday at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Parkland, the defending 4-A champ after winning three state tournament titles at the 3-A level, has six wrestlers still alive in the championship brackets and has totaled 77 points, 18 ahead of second-place Lake Norman.
Davie County is third with 42, followed by Southern Alamance (34) and New Bern (27). A total of 69 4-A schools out of the 78 which sent qualifiers to the event scored points in Friday's action.
Fred T. Foard in Catawba County leads the way in the 3-A competition, as the Tigers scored 52 points to 49.5 for Orange. Foard has four of its five wrestlers still in championship contention while Orange, this year's 2-A dual team winner, has four in championship brackets and two in consolation action.
Cameron Union Pines, with seven grapplers still competing, has 41 points for third place while Hickory St. Stephens (40) is in fourth and defending tournament champ Concord Jay Robinson (33) is fifth. There were 74 3-A schools with wrestlers who qualified.
In 2-A action, Newport Croatan has opened up a 15-point lead over the field and has more wrestlers (five) remaining in championship competition than any other school. Croatan, the defending tourney champ and also winner of the dual team championship earlier in the month, has 63 points to 48 for second-place Newton-Conover. Newton-Conover has seven wrestlers still competing, including three in championship contention.
Trinity is just back in third with 47 points, followed by Monroe Piedmont (45.5) and Hampstead Topsail (43) in the closest team race among the four classifications.
A total of 63 of the 75 2-A schools represented have tallied team points.
The 1-A classification, with only eight wrestlers qualifying per weight class, did not begin competition until Friday evening with the quarterfinals. West Wilkes, the defending tournament champs, had seven of its 10 qualifiers advance through the quarterfinals and leads the 1-A team standings with 22.5 points.
North Rowan is in second with 15, followed by Kernersville Bishop McGuinness (10.5) and then a tie for fourth between Rosewood and Pamlico with 9.5 each.
Action will resume Saturday morning at 8:30 am with consolation action in various classifications. The championship session in all classifications is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
This is the 24th year that the wrestling championships have been "classified"; prior to 1987, all wrestlers, regardless of the size of the school, competed for a single title. Wendy's is the presenting sponsor for the NCHSAA sports program. The host city sponsors for the wrestling championships include the Greensboro Sports Commission, the Greensboro Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Greensboro Sports Council.

Nationally ranked Butler girls survive scare plus 2nd round scores
Butler’s nationally ranked girls won their 41st straight game in a 50-40 N.C. 4A sectional semifinal playoff home win over Northwest Guilford Wednesday.
Northwest (22-6) took a 15-14 lead after the first quarter and played a speciality defense on McDonald’s All-American Cierra Burdick all night. And with Butler’s No. 2 scorer, Jaymee Fisher-Davis, struggling (0-for-10 shooting, 1 point), the Bulldogs (29-0) struggled, too.
“We were missing shots,” coach Mark Sanders said. “We didn’t play well. They came in with a good plan, running the (special) defense, but after awhile, Cierra made it happen.”
Butler led 28-18 at halftime but held on in the fourth quarter as Northwest got to within six. Jadda Atkinson had eight points and 10 rebounds for Butler. Burdick had 26 points and Mayhana Dunovant had 11 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
Butler will play Greensboro Dudley (25-1) at home Friday for the right to go the N.C. 4A Western regionals.
“We can’t do this against Dudley,” Sanders said. “If we have a game like we had (Wednesday) against Dudley and we’ll be in trouble, but I don’t think there’s any way possible we’ll have two games like this back to back.”

One on One with West Meck's Terrence Williams, a Charlotte 49ers recruit
A quick Q&A with the West Meck star and Charlotte 49ers recruit:
Favorite Movie: “Friday.”
Favorite Food: Mac and cheese. My grandmother makes it so good. I don’t know what she puts into it, what her secret ingredient is, but it’s not like the others I’ve had.
Favorite TV Show: NBA TV. Anything on NBA TV.
Most Proud Of: A couple weeks ago, we went to a Special Olympics game and helped the kids dribble and shoot and we taught them how to play a little bit. It was so much fun. I’d never gone out and helped in the community like that. They really appreciated us. It’s something I’ll definitely do again.
Basketball Dream: To get through college and get to the league (NBA). But if it doesn’t work out, I need a backup plan. I was thinking about being a philanthropist.
Something your momma doesn’t even know about you: Man, you’ve got the wrong one. I talk to my mom all the time. She knows everything.
The last thing you’d be caught doing: Drugs!

Final Sweet 16 of the regular-season sees 3 changes
The final Sweet 16 poll of the regular-season find the top four boys spots the same and two new teams joining in.
Mooresville, which upset North Meck last week is in at No. 13. The Blue Devils won their final three regular-season games in a tough I-Meck 4A conference. North Meck dropped one spot to No. 8 this week.
The other new team is No. 12 Marvin Ridge, which has also won three in a row for legendary coach Gosnell White.
-- The girls poll is pretty solid. Despite winning its 19th straight game, North Iredell is again stuck at No. 9. And 22-1 Belmont South Point can’t move up despite winning a share of its first conference title since 1979.
There is one change in the girls poll: Ardrey Kell returns at No. 16.
-- This is the final Sweet 16 until a champion is announced after the season ends next month. Eligible teams must field football and basketball teams, play in an accredited state association and not allow student-athletes to maintain eligibility when repeating a grade during his or her high school years.
