Next Friday at Memorial Stadium, unbeaten Butler will place once beaten Independence for the Southwestern 4A championship game, and Butler QB Riley Ferguson, a preseason All-American, will make his return.
Ferguson has not played since September, out with a broken right (throwing) hand. His mother, Diana, told the Observer that her son will play.
"He is SO looking forward to it!" Diana Ferguson said in a text message. "He's back."
Riley Ferguson passed for more than 700 yards in about three games this season. He'll return one week before the start of the N.C. 4AA playoffs, where Butler will try to win its third state title in four years.
Butler won in Ferguson's sophomore year, with Ferguson as a starter. Last season, Butler was upset in the quarterfinals by eventual state champ Greensboro Page.
Ferguson has committed to Tennessee.
