For me, the best I've seen in person is Vince Carter. Gerald Henderson, now of the Hornets, and LeBron James were also pretty amazing in high school.

I once saw former Providence High and UNC star Antawn Jamison jump one foot inside the free throw line -- in a game -- and throw one down left-handed (Jamison is a rightie).

But there's a kid playing right now who will give any of them a run for their money.

Fayetteville's Kwe Parker impressed me catching alley-oops from teammate Dennis Smith as a 9th grader when Parker and Smith were teammates at Fayetteville's Trinity Christian High. I've seen Parker make some absolutely silly dunks in warm-ups before Trinity Christian games and I've seen him make a few in games that made you look at your neighbor and shake your head ("Did you see that?").

Smith, a 6-2 junior point guard, has gone onto become one of the nation's top 10 in his class and one of North Carolina's best three players, period. Parker has become one of the most famous players in his class because of his unique jumping ability. A high major Division I recruit, Parker will play at High Point Wesleyan this season, leaving Smith but joining another top national recruit, 6-9 junior Harry Giles.

Here is a new video of Parker dunking (the right-hander nearly touches the rim with his head before tossing in a left-handed tip dunk that would win many a dunk competition).
Gatorade boys track athlete of the yearFrom staff reports

CHICAGO (June 20, 2014) — In its 29th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, today announced Trentavis Friday of Cherryville High School as its 2013-14 Gatorade North Carolina Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Friday is the first Gatorade North Carolina Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year to be chosen from Cherryville High School.

Friday was named All-Observer boys track athlete of the year last week.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the track, distinguishes Friday as North Carolina’s best high school boys track & field athlete. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year award to be announced in June, Friday joins an elite alumni association of state award-winners in 12 sports, including Ryan Hall (1999-01, Big Bear HS, Calif.), Meb Keflezighi (1993-94, San Diego HS, Calif.), Derek Jeter (1991-92, Kalamazoo HS, Mich.), Candace Parker (2001-02, Naperville Central HS, Ill.), Mark Sanchez (2004-05, Mission Viejo HS, Calif.) and Lolo Jones (1997-98, Roosevelt HS, Ia.).

The 6-foot-2, 165-pound senior won three individual state championships and anchored the winning 4x400-meter relay quartet at the Class 1A state meet this spring, leading the Ironmen to a second-place finish as a team. Friday took gold in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.59 seconds, the 200-meter dash in 20.95 and the 400-meter run in 47.87. The New Balance Nationals Indoor champion and the NBN meet indoor record-holder in both the 60 and 200, he also captured the 200-meter crown at this month’s New Balance Nationals Outdoor championships. Friday’s season-bests of 10.17 in the 100 and 20.33 in the 200 both rank as the nation’s No. 1 performances among prep competitors in 2014 at the time of his selection.

Friday has maintained a B average in the classroom. In addition to serving on the Cherryville High school yearbook and school newspaper staffs, he has volunteered locally for two years on behalf of the First Wesleyan Church’s feed-the-homeless initiative. He has also donated his time as part of his school’s morning-announcements team and has worked with special needs students at the Webb Street School.

“He’s worked hard and stayed healthy, and he’s just a special runner,” said Cherryville head coach Keith Fox. “He can do anything. He could go out and run a 1:54 in the 800 if we wanted him to. He put in a lot of time in the offseason, worked in the weight room. We knew he was capable of a season like this.”

Friday has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete in track and field on scholarship at Florida State University this fall.

Observer Sportshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07996319410978004669noreply@blogger.com25tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-538710650323519584.post-17300220694421508522014-06-17T13:03:00.000-04:002014-06-20T10:41:57.639-04:00NBA star Stephen Curry to offer free camp Wednesday, spots available NBA star and former Davidson and Charlotte Christian star will hold a
Shuford coached at Olympic since 2007. His 2013 team was 7-5.
After going 4-7 in his first season, Shuford’s next six teams produced
no losing seasons.
Before coaching at Olympic, Shuford was at Parkwood High
(2003-06), Butler (1997-02), Garinger (1992-95) and Bessemer City
(1989-91).

His career record is 142-137.

East Mecklenburg was 1-10 last season under coach Chris Williams. In two seasons, Williams was 3-19. Prior to Williams, Jeremy Buck was 2-20 in two seasons.
Wednesday, Konstanty said he was “thrilled” to announce that former Vance and Winston-Salem Carver coach Keith Wilkes would replace Shuford at Olympic.

“We’re excited to get someone of a Shuford quality,” Konstanty said. “That’s what we were looking for. We’re confident coach Wilkes will be able to come in and our school won’t miss a bit. We’re hopeful he can take us to the next level.”

Konstanty said Wilkes will start working with the team this week. He likely won’t start working in the school until August.

Shuford coached at Olympic since 2007. His 2013 team was 7-5. After going 4-7 in his first season, Shuford’s next six teams produced no losing seasons.

Wilkes was hired at Vance in January of 2012 and coached the Cougars in the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The 2012 Vance team was 9-4. Vance was 6-6 last season after a 4-1 start. The Cougars lost their final three games and four of their last five. Vance High athletics director Carlos Richardson told the Observer that Wilkes and the school had a “mutual decision” to part ways after the 2013 season. Wilkes resigned in November, shortly after Vance’s season was over.

Wilkes, part of the 2011 class of the Winston-Salem/Forysth County High School Sports Hall of Fame, built quite a tradition at Winston-Salem Carver.

From 1992-2007, his teams were 139-62-1 with 11 conference titles and state championships in 1998 and 2003. Wilkes was 9-21 at Shiloh High in Snellsville, Ga., for three seasons before resigning and eventually landing at Vance.
Observer Sportshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07996319410978004669noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-538710650323519584.post-66420756730535427912014-02-22T10:52:00.001-05:002014-02-22T10:52:21.223-05:00In high school athletics, NCISAA basketball finals as good as it getsHigh school athletes in North Carolina are awful lucky.

In a 26-year career at the Observer, I've been able to see high school sports championships in seven states and seen a few more while traveling. Nothing I've seen comes close to the job that the N.C. High School Athletic Association (public schools) and the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association (private schools) do with the state basketball championships each year.

Each event is the singular highlight of the prep season, along with the NCHSAA football finals. Due to the number of schools playing for finals, the NCHSAA divides its finals into two locations for basketball and three for football. The NCISAA, like today, packs them all into one gym.

That allows the fans to see all the top players and all the top teams. All of the NCISAA officials are on hand, from executive director Chuck Carter down to former coaches and athletics directors at the school level. In some ways, it's like a family reunion for the Independent Schools. And it doesn't hurt that the basketball is always phenomenal.

Time Warner Cable is broadcasting today's finals and from the packed gym to the players from other schools watching to the incredible decibel level, this is something special, something the participants will remember forever.

And that's what high school athletics should be all about.Observer Sportshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07996319410978004669noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-538710650323519584.post-77185286254151120142014-02-17T21:46:00.002-05:002014-02-18T11:41:45.764-05:00CMS conference basketball tournament pairingsBoys
