Mallard Creek quarterback Marquise Williams had one of the best seasons in Mecklenburg County history.
Butler linebacker Kris Frost captained one of the best defenses to ever play there.
Today, Williams is named Charlotte Observer All-Mecklenburg player of the year on offense. Frost is the All-Mecklenburg defensive player of the year.
Williams, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound senior, completed 170 of 254 passes (67 percent) for 3,034 yards and 45 touchdowns. He threw only eight interceptions. Williams also rushed for 1,147 yards and 19 touchdowns. The passing yards rank 19th in county history. The passing touchdowns is sixth best in county history.
Williams led the Mavericks to a school-record wins and to the N.C. 4AA quarterfinals, as deep in the playoffs as any Mallard Creek team had gone.
Frost, a 6-3, 220-pound senior linebacker, is a U.S. Army All-American. He anchored what was arguably the state's best defense. Butler allowed 11.5 points per game by playing a demanding schedule. Most teams, including elite ones, ran away from him constantly. Frost finished with 103 total tackles and five stacks. He was a Shrine Bowl pick and will announce his college choice next month from Auburn, Louisiana State and Michigan.
Garinger interim coach Lin Fisher is the All-Meck coach of the year. Fisher took over from Terry Liggin just before the start of the season and led the Wildcats to a 7-5 record, their most wins in 20 years. Garinger had a five-game win streak in September, its longest in 16 years and hosted a playoff game, a rarity at the school.
