Crest and West Rowan ranked No. 4 and 3 in the preseason Sweet 16

Crest and West Rowan, teams that reached the N.C. 3AA and 3A state finals last season, are ranked No. 4 and No. 3 in the preseason Sweet 16. Look for stories on both teams in Saturday's editions of the newspaper in print.

Saturday at 3, the top two teams in the poll will debut.

What a joke. Rankings are horrible until a team actually plays. West Rowan got smoked by Charlotte Catholic in a scrimmage. I saw rankings come out after week 2

Who cares if Charlotte Catholic beat West in a scrimmage that does not count. They beat them last year in a scrimmage and what was the end result, another ring for West and a trip home for Catholic.

Langston Wertz, the NEW writer for CharlotteMoms.com

So, I guess Porter Ridge will just have to beat A.L.Brown (at home) AND Sun Valley (on the road).

Nice job Langston! Enjoy your new assignment. Maybe the women will appreciate your estrogen.

I think West Rowan (3A) may have had a tough time making it to Raleigh if they had played Crest (3AA).

Chances of Porter Ridge winning the NC 4A title? PR hurt their rep somewhat losing to Davie last year.

Langston is one of several voters, he does not make the poll up as he goes. Guy does a good job. btango

Let me get this straight. Besides the forfeit to Forest Hills where they crushed them by 40 points, the only loss 4A Porter Ridge had all last season was in the state title game by 1 touchdown. They beat ranked Sun Valley. Yet they're going to start the season off unranked? And 3-8 Independence starts the season ranked?

Are you. Freaking. KIDDING ME?

Where is Porter Ridge?

MOORESVILLE NOT RANKED.WHAT A JOKE!

Anon @ 3:43 - I saw both Catholic and West Rowan play last year. Catholic would have beat West by three touchdowns, not to mention what Crest would have done to them. End of story.

Either way, these rankings are for THIS year. Not LAST year. Come on people - THINK....

Porter Ridge is located in Indian Trail.

Langston, you're an imbecile! When A.L.Brown limps home from its loss to the Pirates, you're going to look like such a fool.

This is really a Joke, if Porter Ridge is not ranked with the players they return.....Oh I forgot this is the Charlotte Observer!

Lost all credibality with Porter Ridge being left out. Guess the Pirates will do just like last season. Start off unranked and blast everyone they play and end up in the top 5 again. Try looking into the teams a little harder next year before the season starts.

Yeah, yeah. No surprise, same teams that are always at the top. If you remember, Langston declared the 3-A & 3-AA playoffs over after the first week. What happened?
Crest shocked Catholic and Hibriten should have beat West Rowan. They were fortunate to escape and so was Langston, who would have been eating a plate of crow on channel 36.
The real deal starts next week, and I agree with a previous post: Let these rankings come out after a couple of games. We know nothing about how this season will play out right now.

Charlotte catholic will always look good in scrimmages because it's a short field and there 99.9% run oriented......they don't have a real polished passing game....watch all there qb the last 5years they all throw off balance and they are poorly coached....I wish I had a dollar for every time I heard that if they had a real offensive cordinator they would of won 10 state championships ...

Charlotte Observer. I mean really do you guys actually go out and visit schools and have conversations with the coaching staff. You guys are the most uninformed group of writers on the planet. Shame on you for not doing your jobs.

Langston stop researching off the internet

I have to agree with the catholic comments year in and year out they are big fast smart and at least 2 deep at every position . Look at how Latin and country day have done against them with a 25% less talent....the difference is the coaching if you had either the Latin or country day coach with that much talent they would be in the same category as butler Indy Richmond country day Latin....
