Barry Shuford resigns as Olympic Football coach

Olympic High head football coach Barry Shuford has resigned.

Shuford said he wants to spend more time following his son and daughter, who are playing sports in college.

Shuford coached at Olympic since 2007. His 2013 team was 7-5. After going 4-7 in his first season, Shuford's next six teams produced no losing seasons.

Prior to coaching at Olympic, Shuford was at Monroe's Parkwood High from 2003-06, at Butler from 1997-02, at Garinger from 1992-95, and at Bessemer City from 1989-91.

His career record is 142-137.

In a letter to Olympic's administration, Shuford said, "I am resigning as head football coach at Olympic High School effective immediately. I would like to travel to see my son and daughter participate in college sports and would like to do that freely without the burden of feeling that I am neglecting my kids at Olympic High School."

With Shuford's resignation, there are now five head football jobs open at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

The others (info on each link) are at Myers Park, Garinger and Vance and West Charlotte.

West Charlotte football coach Marcus Surratt resigns

West Charlotte athletics director Chris Satterfield told the Observer that Lions football coach Marcus Surratt has resigned.

Surratt coached the Lions for four seasons. His first team, in 2010, finished 8-5. The Lions have been 5-28 since.

Satterfield said the school will begin a search for a replacement immediately.

In the just completed 2013 season, Surratt's team was 0-11 and was outscored 532-146. West Charlotte reached the state semifinals in 2007 under Maurice Flowers but had to forfeit its wins because of ineligible players.

The 2013 season was the first time West Charlotte had gone without a win on the field since 1968.

From 1980-1999, the Lions had two head coaches -- Bruce Hardin and Tom Knotts, a pair that led the Lions to five state championship appearances.

Since 2000, the Lions have had six head coaches: Mike Helms (6-5, 2000 season), Pete Gilchrist (50-29, 2001-06, one state finals appearance), Flowers (0-14-1, 2007), Aaron Brand (9-4, 2008), Jeff Simpson (5-7, 2009) and Surratt.

West Charlotte joins Myers Park, Garinger and Vance as Mecklenburg County schools with head coaching vacancies.
