Friday's Roundup
Butler 48, West Forsyth 7: West Forsyth scored on its first possession and grabbed a 7-0 lead and appeared poised to show why it was the No. 1 overall seed in the N.C. 4AA West bracket.
But Butler scored on its first possession, too. And the Bulldogs wouldn't stop scoring.
Butler (11-3) scored every time it had the ball in the first half, led 34-0 at halftime and by the end of the third quarter, Bulldogs' coach Brian Hales was taking all of his starters out. Butler reached the N.C. 4AA semifinals for the third time in four years and the reigning state champs will have a chance to get in position to defend their championship. Butler plays at unbeaten Mallard Creek (14-0) next Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Parkwood 24, Hunter Huss 14: Parkwood grabbed a 21-7 lead and held on. The Rebels were in the quarterfinals for the first time since 1972, after beating county rival Forest Hills 17-7 last week. After Friday’s win, Parkwood (8-6) will try to reach the state finals for the first time. It’ll face another county rival, Monroe, is next week’s regional championship. Parkwood made the semifinals in 1972.
Crest 30, Asheville Reynolds 13: Crest ended Asheville Reynolds' Cinderella ride through the N.C. 3A playoffs. Reynolds was a No. 13 seed. P.J. Brooks had the put-away 12-yard touchdown run for the Chargers with 3:28 to play. Crest will host next week's regional championship against three-time state champion Northern Guilford. Northern Guilford beat Crest 21-20 in 2010 to win the first of those three straight after Crest's kicker missed a point-after that would've tied the game with 15.7 seconds left. Northern Guilford also beat Crest 31-7 in the 2011 N.C. 3AA final.
Forestview 42, Hibriten 20: Forestview was in the N.C. quarterfinals for the first time in school history but turned a 14-7 halftime lead into a 35-7 second-half lead lead to secure the school's first-ever regional championship berth.
Shelby 45, North Rowan 21: Shelby ended North Rowan's unbeaten season in impressive fashion. Shelby led 28-14 at halftime and 31-14 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth, North Rowan closed to 31-21, but Jaquavis Brooks' 47-yard run with 10:34 left pushed Shelby's lead to 38-21 and Brooks got another score from six yards out for the final margin. He finished with three touchdowns Friday.

Marvin Ridge, Salisbury win NCHSAA 3A and 2A soccer state titles
Courtesy: NCHSAA
RALEIGH— Klint Parker of Waxhaw Marvin Ridge scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute in a wild 6-5 victory over defending champion Jacksonville for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men's soccer championship at Dail Soccer Field at North Carolina State University on Saturday afternoon.
It was the highest scoring NCHSAA men’s soccer final in history, with the 11 total goals, and four goals were scored in the final 10 minutes.
Senior midfielder Kyle Enoch of Marvin Ridge, who had two goals and an assist, was name the Most Valuable Player of the championship.
Jacksonville opened the scoring in the first three minutes on a goal by Tyler Moore, but Marvin Ridge erupted for four unanswered tallies to take a 4-1 lead at halftime. The Cardinals battled back with three unanswered goals themselves, in a 16-minute span, and finally tied the game in the 70th minute on Moore’s second goal of the match.
The tie didn’t last long, because Enoch scored off an assist from Will Green, who had three assists and a goal on the day, less than a minute later for a 5-4 Maverick lead.
The Cardinals weren’t through, with Dylan Elliott knotting the game again, this time at 5-5 in the 75th minute, setting the stage for Parker’s dramatic game winner with just 1:27 showing on the clock, his second goal of the day and 24th of the season.
Marvin Ridge had eight shots on goal to six for Jacksonville. Both teams were in the attack mode as each had eight corner kicks.
Jacksonville was making its fifth visit to the NCHSAA finals since 2005, with a 2-2 mark in previous title matches including an overtime win over Hickory in last year’s championship. Marvin Ridge was in the final for the second time, with its previous appearance resulting in a state title in 2009.
Marvin Ridge finished the year with a 22-1-1 and a nine-match winning streak. Jacksonville, which had won seven straight entering the final, finished 20-5-1.
