Ram tough: Harding boys and girls reach N.C. 3A Regionals

Friday night was extra special for Harding High School.

The boys team, which had struggled in the regular-season at times, upset Sweet 16 No. 7 Concord 71-65, at Concord, to advance to the N.C. Western Regionals for the first time.

The Rams girls, reigning N.C. 3A Western Regional and N.C. 3A state champions, beat Carson 48-32 to earn a repeat regional berth.

In the boys game, Harding overcame early foul trouble to center Steven Burrough (seven points) and slowed down high-scoring Concord.

Point guard Aaron Linton had 18 points, seven assists, six steals and five rebounds. Emmanuel Patton had 14 points and Darryl White and Jalien Byers had 10 each. Darren Black (21 points) and Connor Burchfield (16) led the Spiders.

Harding’s girls pounded Carson with defense in a 48-32 win. Carson had one quarter, the third, when it scored more than seven points.

Abrea Harris led the Rams with 15 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and three assists. Brianna Hamrick had seven points and 10 rebounds and Ralisha Currence finished with 13 ponits, three steals and three assists.

Harding has an unfair advantage in playing 3A sports with their large 4A attendance numbers. Sure their school's going to eek out these wins against other schools with around only 1000 students. If they were playing in the 4A bracket like thay should be- both of their teams would have already been sent home.

I dont think the difference between 3A/4A matters as much as the smaller schools that are 1A. At the end of the day, a good team is a good team, and a bad team is a bad team. Concord and Harding are both good teams, Last night harding was the better team. Same as the girls. Truthfully, hardings student population is not as high as you think.

The population is not as high as you think?? What's that supposed to mean? Every school has to report their attendance to the NCHSAA for realignment and football pairings. There's no guess work here. Harding reported, themselves, to the state for realignment a student population of 1833. School administration gave these actual numbers. Where as Carson only has 1176- true 3A numbers. Concord has 1084, again a real 3A team. The size of the school DOES matter. That is why they have 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A class to begin with. It's not just an unfair advantage in talent but more so in depth. That's how the girls won the championship last year. Even the article states "The boys team, which had struggled in the regular-season at times" Yes they struggled, against teams their OWN size. Like was mentioned before, Put Harding in the 4A bracket and make them play schools their own size...using THEIR OWN REPORTED NUMBERS.

I went to Harding class of '02, and just because we have those #'s it doesn't balance to all the other 4A schools. Anybody just can't go to Harding so as far as the athletic population its very small compared to the other 4A schools. keep doin ya thang Rams, people will hate always

Were they playing for a Snicker Bar? Is that why Concord lost?

Your just mad cause y'all lost! We got the win cause we earned it. And I bet you wasn't mad about the population of our school when concord was up on us by 13 going in to halftime?? But you are more than welcome to come watch us at UNCG :)

Many of these posts sound like typical Concord sour grapes. You all have the whiniest, most entitled group of players/fans ever. Obnoxious. It all starts with your head coach too: a complete jerk. He is arrogant and puts on a terrible example for the kids. If you are gonna win, win with class. Concord should make a coaching change. Brewer's behavior is a slap in the face to the Concord basketball tradition.

Firstly let me give a shout to the Harding Rams basketball teams. Now for the one who is upset because Concord lost. Olympic, Garinger, West Charlotte, Butler, Ardrey Kell, etc. Are all 4A schools. With that being said you win some, you lose some. At the end of the day the 5 that come on the court ready to play are the 5 that's going to win. In other words get over and get on board.

I commend a program like Harding's. Over the past decade or so the Rams have put some quality teams both mens and womens on the court. The women's team may be the most successful program in the region based on winning percentage, conference championships and post season wins, including a state title. These teams were well coached and the kids played with great intensity. They were not always dominant but they played well when it counted. Harding has a very strong tradition in basketball and they continually exceed expectations. When the magnet program left Harding, everyone expected them to just go away. They did not and the school has battled back from being a top 25 school in the country to being a neighborhood school and dealing with the problems and issues that every school has to encounter. I wish Harding good luck and continued success as they pursue championships.

Even though it was intentionally not mentioned in the article everybody knows Harding High School was blown out BIGTIME and stuffed past 2 times these 2 teams played each other so they got a little payback. It happens. The 3A/4A comparison is asinine. No difference.

Someone SHOULD be checking as to how Harding's girls has a player that can complete a full season playing in another state and come BACK to finish up the season with Harding just in time for playoffs. That surely doesn't seem legal?

Ram tough? We talkin Dodge pickup trucks or hoops here? Since when were the Rams ever tough? They always played like cupcakes and twinkies.

The reason why she came back is for family purposes. She moved back to her home school and is now an independent student...stop the complaining!

Harding's Girls' Coach is an EXCELLENT SMART Experienced Coach - he can take a good team and make them great which is why they easily beat several 4A teams that played against them this year AND beat Berry. Berry had DI players, lots of height and new raw talent but unfortunately also has a cocky totally inexperienced coach who was (is) INCAPABLE of coaching at high school level. (he should go back to middle school) Berry got KILLED in their last regional game because of the poor coaching. Good luck to Harding!
