Major movement in Observer Sweet 16 basketball polls this week

There’s a lot of movement in the Sweet 16 this week and many ranked teams suffered defeats last week.

There’s no change at the top, however.

Olympic and Myers Park’s girls are still enjoying unbeaten seasons and both still sit at No. 1 in the polls.

In the boys poll, North Meck’s continued strong play against strong competition has vaulted the Vikings from No. 5 to No. 2 after former No. 2 Northside Christian lost to a strong Davidson Day team Saturday.

Two new teams join the poll: No. 13 Concord Robinson, which has won nine straight games and No. 16 Hickory, off to a 15-2 start.

-- In the girls poll, No. 4 Hickory and No. 5 Ardrey Kell jumped three spots each and unbeaten North Stanly joined the poll at No. 16.

Note: To be ranked in the Observer’s Sweet 16, a team must be in the newspaper’s coverage area, must field football and basketball teams and not allow a student-athlete to re-class once they’ve started ninth grade. Northside Christian has moved down 4 spots on the Sweet 16 because of their loss of 1 game? Baffled...

Northside has a football program?

No, just checked...Northside doesn't have a football program. How can they be ranked in this poll based on the criteria listed?

This poll means nothing, just one persons opinion. Check out max preps or nc rivals and they have more accurate rankings. They base the rankings based on strength of schedule, record, head-to-head etc. Criteria for this poll is not even followed. Why are Lancaster, Hickory, North Rowan, Bandys and Carson in these opinion polls, doesn't make sense.

Northside ALSO has a 5th year player who somehow re-classed after his senior season last year.(?) By the way, I know Langston knows this, too!

all of this is bull!! how is west charlotte still in the sweet 16? just because they won the championship last year? mooresville beat them and mooresville got dropped out

anon 1:42 It is easy to understand why WC is still in the rankings. That is where Langston went!

What does Mallard Creek have to do? They're tied for second in arguably the toughest conference in the state.

McDowell Lady Titans are 15-2,yet ignored...yes they DO sell the Observer in Marion.

So, even though Charlotte Catholic is ranked ahead of Berry and Harding in conference play and equal or better than them on Max Preps - they cannot make it into the CO rankings. Talk about a BS poll.
