Four girls basketball players at A.L. Brown and Vance High Schools will each be suspended four games following their actions in a fight that ended Monday's game between the schools.
During the third quarter, a player from Brown and a player from Vance dove for a loose ball. The players became entangled and a fight broke out. Vance athletics director Carlos Richardson stopped the game with about three minutes left in the third quarter.
Brown was declared the winner 40-32. After the fight was broken up Monday, Vance's boys defeated AL Brown 70-49.
On Tuesday, school and state officials reviewed video of the incident. N.C. High School Athletic Association commissioner Davis Whitfield told the Observer that two players from each team were ejected for fighting. Per NCHSAA rules, that will result in a four-game suspension.
"We intend to contact both schools," Whitfield said. "That's not the kind of behavior we need from either side. We'll discuss the importance of sportsmanship and proper behavior. We will definitely follow up on this."
Vance was scheduled to play rival Mallard Creek at home Tuesday night at 6. Brown was to play at Hough.

Finally, Vance HS girl's basketball team made the Charlotte Observer. They had to get in a fight to be recognized by the writers of the paper. They have had a losing season, true, but at least give them some positives on their individual stats. Parents and fans would love to read about their accomplishments.

We are reading about the accomplishments of the Vance girls right now. Parents and fans should be proud.....of the girls who DID NOT get suspended for four games.
