W. Charlotte moves to No. 1 in Observer's Sweet 16 poll

West Charlotte’s boys planned to play a Christmas Tournament this year, but the heavy snowstorm that hit the Carolinas Christmas Day forced the Lions to postpone a trip to the Maryland area.

So the Lions got an extended break. Still, West Charlotte resumes play tonight as the No. 1 team in the Observer’s Sweet 16 poll. The Lions replace Olympic, which lost in a Christmas tournament on a jump shot at the buzzer. No. 3 is preseason No. 1 Charlotte Christian. And this week’s Sweet 16 is actually 17 teams. Salisbury and Cherryville tied for 16th.

In the girls poll, Butler is No. 1, one spot ahead of preseason No. 2 Salisbury. Berry, the Bojangles’ Shootout champion, is No. 3.
Butler has a key game tonight at No. 11 Ardrey Kell.

Not a single person cares... not really... this is why we are 15th in reading and 20th in math....because the media and parents and kids place more importance on throwing, bouncing a ball then their academics...schools are NOT sports training facilities, yet the Observer and others continue to pander that image... thanks.

I care..and my child has a 3.8 GPA along with a nice cross over..it's call having a balance...

IMO..High school athletics supplement the high school experience. The top priority should always be academics. For an athlete to make any sports team CMS requires a GPA a full point above the state mandate. Facts about hs athletes from the NC HS Athletic Association...
1. make higher grades

2. get into less trouble

3. graduate at a higher rate

4. drop out less often

5. have higher GPAs than non-athletes

They are more than likely in great physical condition,
at a time when US kids are ranking high on the obesity scale.

How to pay for it is another situation.

Once again Langston your poll makes no sense. Mooresville is 9-3 beat Vance and Lancaster both in your previous pool.

WE CARE...HEALTHY MINDS AND BODIES!
You are obviously very constricted in your thinking...less your kind=better schools and students(and probably, IMHO, a better world)

Still got childhood trauma from not getting picked to play(not even last due to poor skills and self-image)? Grow up...I PRAY THAT YOU HAVE NO EFFECT IN THE WORLD....

HS athletics not only benefit the athletes themselves but the student body in general.
Paying for it is a simple matter. Make the games desirable to attend. 14 police officers and 10 people with metal detectors greeting you at the gate drives people away and costs big dollars. Have competitive bidding for the officials. CMS has awarded a no bid contract to ONE booking agent for years. These are only a couple of items of many. Before anything will work though, it is important that the athletic department of CMS be revamped. The present staff has no focus. Wanting to cut programs to benefit academics is not a bad thing. I just think it is funny that people always target sports. How about if a student has a cell phone, they don't qualify for FRL. OR, how about the FRL program stops when school is out. Feeding people year round is not MY resposibility. Oh yea, I forgot. My kid plays 2 sports in HS and has a 3.85 GPA.

I sure am glad E. Rutherford got some love. Might want to move em on up in the poll when they whip Burns tomorrow. Devince Boykins is a beast!!

If your child has a 3.8 GPA and a great cross-over, you ARE one of the few exceptions!! That is not normal in high school athletics nowadays!! Can your child be a mentor for the others?

Here's a great test for the parent(s).

How much time do you as a parent spend each day talking about athletics versus academics with your child? This will clearing tell you where your "balance".

Quit whining.....If they want to be great athletes and then flip burgers, it is up to them. I suppose you come from one of those wealthy families that can ensure a top level education throughout.

NEWS FLASH pal! Public schools are free and offer the same opportunity to everyone!

And interestly enough....many of those wealthy kids end up at the same colleges as the not so wealthy!

Just for everyone's information. Freedom is 10-4 and lost to Burns. So not real sure how they are 12 and Burns is 14. I think it should be Freedom 14, Burns 13, and East Rutherford 12. Then after East loses tonight, Burns can jump higher.

Berry Girls (Rocky River 2A Champs 2009) tied with one other NC public school's girls basketball team for highest GPA in the state. Most of them are straight A students - all of them are taking Honors and AP classes.

and they kick butt on the court too :)

Now THAT'S what I'm talkin about!!

I bet none of them have the "big head" either!

Congrats Berry girls!!

LMAAAAAO....some of you clowns are really on some "Other Than" Drug...LOL
1) If yo udon't CARE...then why CARE to come and post on the article, other than excercising your "Right" to do so, and WASTING your time??
2) Why are some of you "Generalizing" Publice school athletes??
My bad.......I forgot what a wise man once told me...."It's easier mentally for one to "Generalize" and "Lump" all into the same group...than to use "Criticle Think'n".....LLS
Just because a kids is playing a highschool sport, doesn't mean the parent isn't hard on them about their education.
Some of you sound like you don't have an athletic bone in your body...or still bitter because you couldn't run out of sight in a week, so you couldn't play a sport in high school.
And please miss me with the "I was All world in highschool" posts...especially here online where anyone can say ANYTHING online about themselves....LLS

And no...I didn't CARE to spell check....(For those who spend their lifetime online as the "Gramma Police".....LOL)

St. Stephens in the Sweet 16 is a joke. They play NO ONE...They have already been beaten in their conference by a very WEAK Hibriten team and was BEAT LIKE A DRUM by Hickory, once again in their conference. They beat up on 2A teams in nonconference and then finish 4-5 in their conference. They are terrible. ANd Freedom...HAHAHAHA...they are aweful this year...Please Langston, do some research before you post your 16 list...what a joke...

I care also. My son played at Olympic last year, graduated with a 3.7 and got a college scholarship. He worked very hard to keep his grades up while playing. He has to work even harder in college but managed a 3.1 for his first semester even while starting every game as a freshman. He was in the news every now and then but definitely not one of the "superstars." He knew that anything less than a B and he was not playing, our rule not the school's. Parents, parent your children. Don't blame the teachers or the school when they fail, look at what you might do better and but the responsibility on your child. We are all created for greatness, when tend to rise to that greatness when it is expected. You get what you expect. Expect better of your child and do the hard work of delivering the consequences early and often. Without athletics I am not sure my son would be at the college he is today and doing so well. Definitely taught him a lot of self discipline and how hard work pays off. GO TROJANS!!

Hey Langston, how about covering Olympic Men's Basketball this season. I have seen a few blurbs but come on, they are good!! A couple of years ago you missed a great game, Olympic at Harding. When I asked why it was not covered you said "you don't win" Well what now? Olympic has only lost 1 game. Will you be at Waddell this Friday? Will you actually have a write up on Olymic or just the score? Not only that, but somebody from the paper needs to look deeper into the discipline the coaching and the group of parents at this school who feed the team and take care of them throughout the season and beyond. This is a story that deserves notice. A lot goes into making this team great. You should check it out.

Hey Olympic parents, we are proud of the boys basketball program. I disagree with 1 comment about the group of parents taking care of your team. Why don't you step up and work your concession stand. Not 1 single parent from basketball has helped at all. Football, Baseball & Soccer parents may decide to stay home unless they see yor BB parents get involved.

um....who are the idiots out there thinking that ranking sports teams hurt academics. some students have a talent in sports and thats what they should express it in.

Providence day girls are capable of beating all of the teams above. Obviously this sweet 16 is NOT up-to-date.!
