Mallard Creek boys basketball coach David Rutledge resigns, takes Wilmington job

David Rutledge, who coached at Mallard Creek for three seasons, told the Observer Tuesday that he’s resigned and taken a similar job at Wilmington’s Ashley High.

Rutledge, 32, was 48-34 at Mallard Creeek.

This is his fourth head coaching job. He previously worked at South Iredell and Newton-Conover.

At Ashley, Rutledge replaces Bryn McSwain who coached for three years. McSwain’s team was 17-9 last season and won its first playoff game.

Rutledge, who has a law degree, will teach psychology at Ashley. He starts at his new school June 1.

Gee...nice article Langston...Rutledge wasn't one of your "boys" so you can't write a nice article on the man. Reality was he was the best coach in the I-Meck over the past 3 seasons...He didn't have any of the talent other schools had and he won with them....He's a top coach in the area and a big loss to CMS....Stay classy Langston...stay classy

He was not well liked at Mallard Creek. Not a leader of young men.
Wish him well.

Ask his players if they liked him...not the ones that played football and then tried to use basketball as a joke sport, but the basketball players...how can he not be a leader when he was at the gym/school EVERY morning at 5:30 working kids out and EVERY afternoon working kids out? You must be one of those "jealous" aau coaches in the area that eventually run good CMS coaches off with your broken promises and dillusional dreams...Now MC can go back to their old ways, let every athlete play and run the place...see where that gets them....

No I'm not a AAU Coach. Sorry! Unfortunately hanging out at the gym 5:30am in the morning does not make you a leader of young men. MC OLD WAYS? You mean sending about 30 kids a year to school on full rides between all sports. Shame on them.

You reap what you sow.
I hope he learned from his mistakes.
I wish him well.

Maybe the 0=50 didn't add up?

I've read a lot of posts by Langston about coaches leaving. It's always fun to see the bitterness rear its ugly head. Moms and dads upset little Johnny or Stevie didn't play or make the team. From the looks of all these articles it seems no coach in Charlotte has ever done anything right.

To all the parents done wrong in all these articles. I'm sorry your sons didn't play. Move on. Hope you learned from your mistakes. Wish all of you well.

Let's get one thing straight. He did not resign. He was fired! I believe he got a little cocky with running his mouth. Every High School in America has parents who believes there kid should start or play. This coach went way beyond not letting little johnny play.I believe he was actually a very good coach. It was the total disrespect he had for some of the players and parents which finally did him in. We all wish we could tell people how we fill 24/7. Unfortunately in certain forums you need to know when to shut your big mouth. This coach did not get the memo.

Actually, he did resign. He accepted the job in Wilmington weeks ago.

So bitter. So sad. I feel sorry for people who need to post these type things. Won't make you feel any better if your a sad bitter person.

He was not fired. Is missed greatly everyday by the kids and was strongest leader in building. Loss to Charlotte, but he spoke up for all the teachers in CMS bullied into not speaking.

Just because your kid does not make a team, does not make the coach wrong! Competitive sports are not for every kid and not for every parent. Too bad those get so intertwined !

I hate David Rutledge left the eastern part of the state because we have acquired this idiot. I think he is honestly a great knowledgeable Coach that understands the game but is a monster to kids! He has his favorite but is always making fun of kids. He is a very bad example for kids! I hate that he has made so many kids hate the game they once loved so much. Shame on you David Rutledge! The day they run you out of our community will not come soon enough!
