NCHSAA state tennis day 1 results

RALEIGH-- Chloe Willietts of Winston-Salam R.J. Reynolds moved a step closer to her second state singles crown on Friday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women's tennis tournament at the Millbrook Exchange Park.

Willetts, who earned the 2009 crown as a freshman, won three matches on Friday to move into Saturday morning's championship. The decision was made to play three rounds on Friday with the threat of inclement weather on Saturday.

Willetts defeated Cary's Jamie Rogers 6-4, 6-2, in the semifinals and now will battle Raleigh Broughton's Maggie Kane in the singles final. Kane teamed with her sister Katie to win the doubles crown in 2010 and were runners-up last year

Last year's singles finalists, champion Hannah Templeton of Greensboro Page and runner-up McKayla Zupan of Wilmington Hoggard, won their opening round matches but each lost in the quarterfinals.

In doubles, Adrienne Overcash and Kara Summerford of Broughton will face Sammi Smith and Jordan Strickland of Cary Panther Creek in an all-Wake County state championship after an all-Wake County semifinal.

Finals are scheduled for 8:30 Saturday morning at the Millbrook Exchange Park, unless inclement weather forces play indoors at N.C. State.
