Olympic High basketball player ruled ineligible

Olympic High's boys basketball team, ranked No. 2 in the Observer's Sweet 16, will play the remainder of the season without of one its best players.

B.J. Gladden, a 6-foot-5 junior wing, has been declared ineligible. Sources told the Observer the issue was with his residency. Sources say Gladden was not living in Olympic's district.

Sue Doran, director of athletics for Mecklenburg County schools, said Olympic will not be held accountable for the eligibility issue. While not naming Gladden, due to privacy issues, she said the school was not at fault.

Olympic coach Ty Baumgardner, who did not return calls, did not include Gladden's name on the roster he released today with his game notes. Olympic (3-0) has a big non-conference game with Myers Park (3-1) tonight.

Gladden scored nine points in Olympic's 88-79 win over Butler Tuesday.

Gladden, a 6-foot-5 forward, is ranked among the state's top 10 players in the junior class by several statewide scouting services. He played at Queens Grant Charter School last year, which has no attendance boundaries.

According to national recruiting website scout.com, Gladden has 11 Division I college recruiting offers. It's unclear where he might now try to enroll.

Gladden was Olympic's fourth leading scorer (8.7 points per game) and second leading rebounder (5.0). He led the team in steals (1.7 per game).

Come on Olympic BBall. You need to contact WC to learn how to fly under the radar.....

Most Schools do it. Coaches will do it as long as the Administrators do not set examples.

You need to get a nearby apartment if you want to play. There are over 100 CMS athletes doing it.

It's funny how Sue Duran turns a blind eye to some schools while enforcing the rules at others. There are known cheaters at Butler and nothing has been done but let another school have a kid play sports at the wrong school and the rules apply.
If there are rules they should be enforced for ALL schools not just certain ones.
Sue it's time you enforce the rules now that Vicki's gone.

Olympic should be held accountable. If the athletic director and head coach were doing their job they would have known that Gladden was ineligible. The only way to prevent schools from using illegal players is to make them forfeit all games played hi n ineligible player on the roster.

Find a school who is dominating and you've found a school who is cheating... Mallard Creek's Football team is filled with players not living where they say!!! Do something Sue!!!

Olympic was Gladden's 3rd school in 3 years. His Freshman year, he played JV at Vance, Sophomore at Queens Grant, and now at Olympic.

He'll probably end up at West Charlotte and be eligble!

Butler players will tell you (and the Observer) they rent apartments and have their parents sign over guarianship for eligibility. Karma bit them. Hope it is worth 1000.00 a month to teach your kids a bad life lesson.

to anon 7:39 not all players rent apartments, some use church members addresses to go to Butler.
Check Crestdale Middle's football team this year there was a Lemay kid that transfered from Mint Hill Middle this year to play at Crestdale while still living off Hwy 218 in Mint Hill.
3rd address in CMS system for this one family in 3 years but none of the addresses are listed in daddy's name on tax records.
And the question is who sins?

Everyone makes a big deal when it comes to athletics. But no one says a word when other people move their kids to a school out of their zone for a better academic opportunity. We're just talking athletic opportunity. It's the parents...NOT the schools and coaches doing this....FOR THE MOST PART. If football is going to be my kid's meal ticket then why wouldn't I want him to go where the best coaching is vs. a school that does not take seriously the quality of their coaching staff? It IS against the rules and that makes it wrong, but sometimes it's just not about going where you can win a championship(s) rather it being about preparing your kid for the next level.

The bigger issue...like always...is the equity among the schools. However, that's another article.

The Lemay dad is out of control. Just look back at his actions when the qb son got in trouble.....now he flouts the rules. If I was a college coach I would not touch any of them with a ten foot stick.

Sue is not going to act on the cheating. Her partner, Vicki has taught her how to play the NCHSAA like a fiddle. The game they play is simple. Keep an illegal powerhouse in each sport. Sometimes more than one, depending on how that sports playoffs are structured. This insures maximum participation as deep into the playoffs as possible. This in turn maximizes the revenues to the CMS AD's office. Until Que Tucker gets off her dead rearend and pulls the trigger on vacating Butlers 3 state titles, don't expect Sue to have any incentive to stop the cheating.

for you clueless, it was an Olympic coach that followed him home and discovered where he really lived. The kid and his parents lied, when a couple of rumors surfaced, the coaches investigated and turned him in. Olympic still has 6 D1 recruits without him, including the # 5 ranked in the Country by ESPN

Anonymous 2:18...you hit the nail on the head! None of the supposed 6 D1 recruits played the entire career at your beloved Olympic. In fact, all have transferred in to keep up with the Dub! Nice try, have your coaching staff stop following players home and start developing his JV players and then they might win the big games!
