Olympic gets biggest win in school history? Trojans stop West Charlotte

Last season, Olympic ascended to No. 1 in the Observer's Sweet 16 for the first time in school history.

Friday night, Olympic may've hit another milestone, grabbing the biggest win in school history.

Some historians may argue, but I'd peg Olympic's 71-68 win over West Charlotte in the championship game of the Upward Classic as the biggest in school history. And it may be the first of two meetings between the teams this year.

For years, West Charlotte, No. 3 in the current Sweet 16 poll, has been the king of Mecklenburg County public school basketball, and in some respects all of Mecklenburg County ball. The Lions have won five state championships since 1986 and are the current reigning champions. They have long been the measuring stick for county teams.

Olympic, currently No. 1 in the Sweet 16, has not won games like this often, most famously being blown out 12 years ago at the old Charlotte Coliseum by West Charlotte in probably the Trojans' biggest game before this, with 15 college coaches, including former Georgetown coach John Thompson (the father of the current coach) in attendance.

This time, the Trojans did it in front of a huge crowd in Spartanburg, S.C., and in front of regional recruiting people and college scouts. It's the kind of win that will make the Trojans the favorite to win the N.C. 4A championship and the kind of win that will make people look forward to a potential rematch in the N.C. 4A regionals.

The teams were in line to play in the regional championship last March before Olympic was upset in the regional semifinals. It'll be interesting to see what happens if the pairings open up to allow it to happen again this year.

How many losses does West Charlotte have to have before Langston stops considering them as there opponents greatest win EVER? They ain't the fricking Miami Heat.

West Charlotte......what a waste of talent. The players have to put up with an incompetent coach that plays "favorites", instead of playing to win. A really good coach would have this team undefeated and not spiraling out of control.

LOL...he's only stating the FACTS!!! LOL Olympic hasn't won a big game against a TRADITIONAL (Not a "Flash In The Pan") Mecklenburg County "Power" such as West Charlotte in Years. It was Big for Harding as well...all you have to do is look back at how many times they've beat'n West Charlotte since '80.

Olympic is #1 they were supposed to win idiots! They can have this one,West Charlotte will win the next one when it counts. Schools work all year to beat West Charlotte and when the playoffs come (Nmeck, Harding, etc) they are at home. Coach Terry is working on blending these guys. When he gets the right combo,it's on. Everyone is so jealous of Terry and the talent he has. Get over it. Everyone Loves the "Dub" HATERS

Olympic beat West Charlotte in a holiday tournament! Who cares! Are they gonna hang a banner in the gym for that! Freeman is a grown man in 11th grade. Let's see if he wins a State Championship before he graduates!

My question is whether Olympic is a special team or if Olympic or West Charlotte has any special players? I think I've read about 60 "special" players and 15 "special" teams in Charlotte over the past 3 weeks, so I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anybody.

The fact of the matter is there were many teams that played Dub C tough last year in the conference. The difference maker was Jacoby Davis (Super-Senior). The team is relatively the same this year minus Jacoby Davis. I would argue they have added size. There should not be that much "blending" to do. They are just not that much better than "some" of the teams in the area. It is what it is.

Who cares?....Dub C cares....Trust me... They lose to Mooresville. They barely beat North Meck. They lose to Olympic. Christmas Tournament or not it matters... Forget about last year's State Championship. It will not help them this year. This is a new year.

Terry will bring in a new "recruit" before the playoffs, so don't worry. Just like he did with Anthony Estes in 09-10 and just like he did with Mark Blackmon last year. He already got Yates from Mallard Creek. It's only a matter of time before they have a roster addition.

wc is not the same coach terry is a good recruiter not a good x's and o's guy he usually gets talent and that's what's been getting him by Mooresville the best team now but coach terry will have 3 or 4 new players before league play starts he does every year when is cms gonna stop this rogue coach

You guys sure are being critical without hesitation. Sounds like sour grapes about Olympic and West Charlotte. You're fooling yourselves if you think most all of these coaches don't recruit nowadays. Unfortunately it's the way it is these days. Look at what the private schools do in terms of recruiting. Edward Addie is one of the worst about it. Why can't you enjoy good HS basketball. Recruiting has been going on for over 30 years.

The private schools are allowed to recruit...that's why Langston did that fabulous article on Byron Dinkins! No one is hating on Olympic and West Charlotte I can assure you unless it is the other 21 public school coaches that went to the CMS required meeting strictly forbidding such activity that Olympic and West Charlotte get away with. Seriously, look at their rosters and then look where each player came from. A real coach coaches and develops the players that come from his school/zone not go out and get pieces to fill out the rest of his teams. That's what college coaches do...funny, you don't see colleges knocking on WC or Oly door to get these so called great coaches! Ha-what a joke!

So Anonymous January 1, 2012 3:11 PM ... can you please tell us where the players at Olympic and West Charlotte came from? I await your response.
