West Rowan football coach Scott Young suffers heart attack, plans to coach Friday

West Rowan football coach Scott Young woke up Monday night at 11:48 with what he said was the worst pain you could imagine in his chest. He was having a heart attack.

Young jumped in his truck and drove to Rowan Regional Medical Center, where doctors said he had a completely blocked artery and performed surgery to insert a stent inside the artery to open it up and allow blood to flow through again.

"Last Thursday, I felt a little mild pain in the chest," Young said. "But I went to the football game (last Friday) and went to my son's baseball game on Sunday. I felt fine. (Monday) night, that all changed."

West Rowan principal Jamie Durant said Joe Nixon, the school's offensive line coach, would take over the team while Young is out. But Young, whose team has won three straight N.C. 3A state championships, doesn't plan to be out long. He said he hoped to get out of the hospital Wednesday and to be at the Falcons' game Friday at West Iredell.

West Rowan (8-2, 5-0 North Piedmont 3A) leads West Iredell (6-3, 4-1) and Statesville (5-5, 4-1) by a game heading into Friday's regular-season finale.

"I'm good now and trying to get some rest," Young said. "We've got a big game Friday. It'll be a challenge for us because (West Iredell is) so good at receiver and we're so young at (defensive back). So if the doctor tells me I ain't good, I won't go. If he says I have his blessing, I'll go be in the press box Friday night."

A FOOTBALL GAME is not worth your LIFE. Think of your son and your family. Set a good example for the players. Faith and Family should come first

4 days after a stent is laudable but it really isn't that big of a deal. I speak from experience. He doesn't have to do it, but it is not life threatening. Many people go to work three days after having a stent put in.

The bigger concern in this article is that he drove himself to the hospital! A Paramedic would have placed a 12 lead monitor on him and diagnosed the blockage immediately and taken him directly to the hospital's catheterization lab for treatment. He could have gone into cardiac arrest on his drive to the hospital and his odds of survival would have plumetted. Glad it worked out for him - but if you think your having a heart attack - call 911. Its the best chance you have of survival, especially in Mecklenburg County; Medic's Paramedics will save your life.
