Tuesday's prep basketball scores, heroes


ELEVATOR

UP, Che’ Bob, Kennedy Charter: Spinning layup at the buzzer Monday gave his team a 87-86 win over a tough Flora Macdonald team. Bob finished with 36 points, 14 rebounds, five assists.

UP, Grant Gossage, Cannon School: Second straight double-double in Tuesday’s 73-59 win over Covenant Day: 15 points, 11 rebounds. Cannon is 4-0. Justus Melton had 22 for Covenant (0-3).

UP, Providence Day: Sweet 16 No. 1 team used a 31-9 first quarter to blow away Grace Academy 99-50 Tuesday. Grant Williams, a 6-7 sophomore, led the Chargers with 18 points and 5 rebounds. Isaac Johnson had 15 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals.

TUESDAY'S TOP GIRLS PERFORMERS

Hannah Billiard, Covenant Day:
10 points, 14 rebounds, 6 blocks in 44-38 loss to Cannon. Her sister, Sarah, had 12 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists.

Carrington Barnett, South Meck:
Freshman had impressive debut in 51-33 win over Independence: 12 points and 13 rebounds. Teammates Alison Fitch (15 points) and Mary Quick (career-high 10) also had big games.

Madison Carter, Bessemer City:
23 points in Tuesday’s 69-34 win over Stuart Cramer. It was Stuart Cramer’s first varsity game.

Alyssa Carbone, Central Academy:
33 points in 51-48 win over Metrolina Christian.

Kelsi Mahoney, Robinson:
21 points, 10 rebounds in a 42-34 win over Northwest Cabarrus.

Sophie Rossitch, Charlotte Catholic: 25 points, five steals in 62-10 win over Country Day Teammate Sarah Dudzinski had 11 points, five steals, four assists.

Jatarie White, Providence Day:
20 points and 12 rebounds in 48-42 win over East Rutherford. White, signed to South Carolina, is a top 10 national recruit.

TUESDAY'S BOYS TOP PERFOMERS


Torin Dorn, Vance: Charlotte 49ers recruit had 23 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists in 60-56 loss to Berry. Teammate Bryson Rankin had 21 points, 5 rebounds.

Terrance Durham, Mallard Creek:
23 points, four rebounds, three steals in 71-57 loss to East Gaston.

Deion Lane, Independence: 20 points, 10 rebounds, 7 blocks, 6 steals and 6 assists in 69-52 win over South Meck.

Luke Maye, Hough: 35 points in 86-47 win over Providence

Jordan McKenzie, Lavar Batts, Robinson: McKenzie had a game-high 20 points, plus 7 rebounds and 6 assists in a 77-49 win over Northwest Cabarrus. Batt, a highly regarded freshman, had 18.


Matt Morgan, Cox Mill: 28 points in 67-61 win over Charlotte Christian.

Trey Phills, Charlotte Christian: 30 points in 67-61 loss to Cox Mill.

Steven Santa Ana, Ardrey Kell: Santa Ana, a junior, is the reigning Southwestern 4A player of the year. He had 23 points and 10 rebounds in Tuesday's 78-66 win over rival Marvin Ridge. Devin Cooper had 19 points, Collin Cooper 15 and Josh Freund 11 for the Knights (2-0).

Tuesday’s Featured Games

United Faith 61, Legacy Charter 52:
United Faith got down 10-2 early and trailed 29-23 at halftime. In the third quarter, Falcons sophomore point guard Ty Gadsden scored 12 of his game-high 17 points and the Falcons (2-0) grabbed a lead on Legacy Charter (2-1). United Faith outscored Legacy Charter 22-9 in the third quarter and held onto win. Nehemiah Mabson had 16 points and seven rebounds for United Faith, and Akim Mitchell and Ben Bennett had 10 each.

No. 2 Providence Day 48, No. 6 East Rutherford 42:
The Chargers took a 12-8 first quarter lead and boosted it to 31-21 at halftime and then held off a tough 2A East Rutherford team, ranked No. 6 in the Observer’s preseason Sweet 16. White led the Chargers with 20 points and freshman Janelle Bailey had 18. East Rutherford was led by Rachel Camp, who had 19 and Shay Dewberry with 12.

No. 2 Hough 86, Providence 47: The Huskies, the second-ranked team in the Observer’s Sweet 16 poll, opened the season on the road with an easy win. Junior Luke Maye had 35 points as the Huskies blew the game open by halftime, leading 42-29. Nolan Nelson (12 points) and Dalen Dotson (11) led Providence (0-1) in the debut of first-year Panthers coach Scott Taylor.

No. 3 Independence 69, South Meck 52: Independence, No. 3 in the Observer’s Sweet 16 preseason poll, was impressive in its season opener against rival South Meck. The Patriots grabbed a 22-12 first quarter lead, pushed it to 41-23 at halftime, and then held South Meck to five points in the third quarter. Tayon Gleaves led the Patriots with 22 points.

1,000:
Parkwood girls star Emry Tsitouris grabbed her 1,000th career rebound in Tuesday’s win over Sun Valley.

15: Charlotte Catholic held rival Country Day to only 15 points in the first half of a 59-30 win to open the season. Country Day fell to 1-1. Robbie Anderson and Joe Scibelli led Catholic with 11 points each.

20: Gaston Day’s Trevor Anderson scored all of his team-high 20 points in the second half of Tuesday’s 87-48 win over Gaston Christian. Derek McKnight had 15, Ben Henderson 13 and Troy Henderson 11 for Gaston Day (3-1). Gaston Christian (0-2) got 20 from Ryan Williams.

59: Hopewell scored 59 points in the second and third quarters of Tuesday's 81-74 win over Garinger to rally from an 11-point first quarter deficit and win.

18-for-24: Providence Day’s Grant Williams, Isaac Johnson and Josh Howard, all sophomores, shot 75 percent from the field, collectively, in Tuesday’s 99-50 win over Grace Academy.
