Providence High's Brett Austin goes No. 54 in MLB Draft

Providence High catcher Brett Austin, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound senior, was selected No. 54 in the Major League Baseball Draft.

Austin, 18, went to the San Diego Padres.

He'd previously signed with N.C. State for college.

Austin was the 2010 Southwestern 4A player of the year and N.C. player of the year. This season, he again made the Southwestern 4A all-conference team and hit .537 with 12 home runs, 10 doubles and 38 RBIs. He stole 14 bases and scored 47 runs.

Let the negotiations begin, playing the chance to play for NC State against the biggest, baddest signing bonus and salary he can land. This is sooo tiresome every summer with MLB prospects and College teams vying for the same talent. Only UNCheat stands a chance against those deep MLB pockets

Usually mlb does not use a first round pick unless they know you will sign.

The 54th pick isn't in the first round.

The 54th pick came from the Compensation round, where teams get extra picks for losing a free agent. So this was technically a 1st round pick.

What a great kid...he deserves it! So proud of you Brett!

What a surprise! He has an average arm at best and average behind the plate. They must see him at second base.

Brett is a great player and person on and off the field. There is nothing "average" about him. You can't be one of the top high school catchers in the country and be "average". Congrats Brett!!
