Charlotte Latin wins 7th straight volleyball title

Charlotte Latin volleyball coach Suzie Pignetti said once you win a state championship, it makes you hungry for more.

The Hawks, a No. 2 seed, won their seventh straight N.C. Independent Schools’ state title at Wesleyan Academy Saturday, beating No. 1 seed Cary Academy in four games. It was the second straight year the Hawks (31-3) beat Cary Academy (35-3) in the championship round.

“It’s always an honor to win a state championship, no matter what kind of team you have,” said Pignetti, whose team lost the first game 26-24 before winning the last three 25-16, 25-22 and 25-14. “And it seems like once you win one, you’re hungry to win more. It doesn’t make easier necessarily because you always have other teams gunning for you and playing harder against you. That was the case last year and this year. Cary is a tough team and has a couple of Division I college recruits.”

Charlotte Latin senior setter Delaney Dalton and sophomore outside hitter Eve Davis were named to the all-state team. Davis had a career-high 30 kills in the match. Dalton had a career-high 43 assists. Freshman outside hitter Kellie Williams had 10 kills. Libero Morgan Henry had 27 digs.

Charlotte Latin got to the finals with a 3-0 win over Hickory Rige (25-14, 25-20 and 25-17) and a semifinal win over host Wesleyan Academy (25-21, 25-22, 25-15).

Pignetti, who won six state championships at rival Charlotte Country Day, won her 13th championship Saturday. She’s coached for 34 seasons.

“Our girls had more heart today and I think we wanted it more,” Pignetti said. “It was a wonderful effort and I’m so proud of them.”

-- Southlake Christian won the 2A state title, beating Asheville Christian 3-1. Southlake ends the season at 25-5.

Providence volleyball moves to regional round

The Providence volleyball program is used to playing for championships. Saturday afternoon, they got one step closer to a chance at another state title, coming back from a 2-1 deficit to beat Mount Tabor 3-2 to move onto the 4A state semifinals.

Providence (26-4), who won the state championship in 1996, 2002, 2004 and 2005 and lost in the final in 2006, will travel to Lake Norman (29-2) Tuesday night for the opportunity to play in the 6th state championship.

“It feels like this team belongs here (state semifinals) and it is good to be back,” Providence volleyball coach Karen Bradbury, in her 5th year as head coach. “This is a talented group of girls. But this is not as far as we want to go. Of course, we want it all (state title).”

Trailing two games to one, it appeared Providence may not make it past the state quarterfinal match against Mount Tabor, but just when it seemed the Panthers were in trouble in game’s four and five, they responded.

Trailing 8 to 10 in game four, Providence used a 14-2 run to the game into a 22-12 advantage, turning the game and the match. Senior Rachel Frick, junior Megan Edwards and sophomore Casey Rieger all made huge kills in the run as the Panthers beat the Spartans 25-14 to tie the match at two games, apiece.

“When we got down (2-1), we all just decided that this wasn’t going to be the last time we all played together,” Frick said, a senior. “I think from there on, we just took a different attitude that we were going to go for it.”

Trailing 9-7 in the fifth and decisive, the Panthers looked to be in trouble again, but again, responded, scoring eight of the game’s next nine points, to win the game, 15-10, and the match 3-2. Frick had four kills in the 8-1 run that clinched the victory.

Frick led a balanced Providence offense with 16 kills, while Edwards added 13 kills and Rieger had 12 kills on the night.

“It doesn’t matter if we go right, left or in the middle, we have a lot of great offensive players,” Frick said. “Once we got going, they didn’t know where we were going with the ball.”

Providence also spent most of the match trying to figure out how to stop the Spartans’ Chelsea Davis. Davis, who had 20 kills on the night, took over for Mount Tabor (27-4) for most of the second and third games, which the Spartans won.

But Davis and company couldn’t finish off the Panthers, when they had them down in both of the final two games.

“This team has been there before,” Bradbury said, who also led her team to a Southwestern 4A title this year. “We have a lot of experience and have learned from a lot of our mistakes and losses. I think we like tough matches like this.”

Weddington duo win 3A state tennis title

Long, three-set matches and tiebreakers were the order of the day on Saturday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A women's tennis tournament championships at the Burlington Tennis Center.

MacKenzie LaSure of Asheville, last year's singles runner-up, earned the title this time with a grueling three-set victory over Masey DeMoss of Mayodan McMichael, 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-1. LaSure had cruised in her morning semifinal, winning in straight sets at love, but DeMoss had to rally past Jasmine Gabriel of Weddington, dropping the first set at love but coming back to win 0-6, 6-1, 6-2.

All of the Saturday double matches went three sets, with the Weddington team of Sarah Carroll and Kindell Schmitt outlasting Lauren Brooker and Caroline Smith of Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, for the state championship.

Brooker and Smith lost only one game in four sets in their two Friday victories and then ousted Rachel Tomchin and Grace Deering of Charlotte Catholic on Saturday morning.

Carroll and Schmitt took three sets in their morning semifinal match to eliminate the Theodossiou sisters, Taylor and Alix, of Asheville 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4.

South Meck doubles team falls in N.C. 4A championship round

RALEIGH -- Melissa Kandinata of Cary Green Hope turned in a strong Saturday performance to take the state singles title in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women's tennis tournament championships at the Millbrook Exchange Park.

Kandinata downed Lauren Frazier of Greenville Rose in the championship match, 6-1, 6-4, after eliminating Grace Baker of Charlotte Myers Park in a tough morning semifinal. Kandinata lost the first set to Baker 6-2 but stormed back to win in straight sets at love as the momentum switched completely.

Baker dropped only four games in four sets on Friday and was seeking her fourth consecutive berth in the state singles final. The Myers Park standout was the singles runner-up last year to Chloe Willetts of Winston-Salem R. J Reynolds, who did not compete in this year's tournament due to injury.

Baker was the 2008 state singles champ and runner-up in 2007 as a freshman.

In doubles, the sister duo of Katie and Maggie Kane of Raleigh Broughton battled through a tough three-set match to take the title over South Mecklenburg's Abby Segodnia and Samantha Forlenza by scores of 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Katie Kane teamed with Asha Iyengar in 2009 to win the doubles crown.

The South Meck pair had earned their way into the finals with a three-set victory in the morning semifinals over the Wilmington Hoggard duo of McKayla Zupan and Elizabeth Hodges.

Berry to rejoin Mecklenburg County conference?

N.C. High School Athletic Association spokesperson Rick Strunk said CMS school officials have submitted paperwork to petition for Berry to rejoin the ME-GA 7 conference next season. Berry is currently in the Rocky River, a conference of 1A and 2A schools, primarily in Union County. Berry's enrollment has grown to where it is now a 3A school.

With CMS's announcement Monday that it would recommend the school board close Harding as a high school, the ME-GA 7 could drop to six teams next season. Adding Berry would bring it back to seven and leave the Rocky River with eight teams.

Strunk said a group of Rocky River principals and athletics directors had voted to allow Berry to leave and a similar group of ME-GA 7 representatives had voted for Berry to join. Strunk said 17 schools were allowed to change conferences in the middle of the last realignment. The current realignment, which began in 2009, runs through the end of the 2012-13 school year.

Olympic coach: No concerns playing at Garinger

Olympic High football coach Barry Shuford said he has "absolutely no concerns" with his team playing at Garinger Friday.

A fight broke out in the stands during Garinger's home game with Charlotte Catholic last week and school officials stopped the game at the start of the fourth quarter with Catholic leading 37-7.

As fans were leaving, another incident happened outside the stadium and police said there were gunshots fired. Two adults and one 17-year-old Garinger student were arrested. No one was struck by gunfire, but a policeman injured his hand trying to break up a fight.

Shuford said that kind of incident could've happened anywhere in the county.

"I know (Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools) will do what they can to make it safe," said Shuford, who coached at Garinger in the mid-'90s. "It was an isolated thing in the parking lot and all the metal detectors in the world won't stop something that happens in the parking lot.

"There are some extra dark areas at Garinger between the stadium and the parking lot. It's been that way for 15 years, but I'm sure they'll beef up security in those areas."

In the past 25 years, there have been several incidents with violence at football games. Among them:

- In 1988, three people, including an assistant coach, were shot with a .22-caliber pistol during a West Charlotte-Garinger game.

- In 1990, a Myers Park student was shot and killed by a stray bullet as he left a Harding at Myers Park game.

- A West Charlotte-Garinger game at Memorial Stadium in 1993 was stopped after a fight in the stands broke out amid cries that someone had a gun.

- In 2001, police made four arrests after gunshots injured two people after a West Charlotte-Garinger game.

- In 2006, a fight broke out at East Mecklenburg after a game with Myers Park. One East Meck student and one from Garinger were beaten with a metal crutch after a group of spectators followed them to a church parking lot after the game. Police said the attack was gang-related.

CMS has responded quickly to incidents over the years.

In 1990, after the Myers Park student was shot and killed, school officials moved game times up 90 minutes, to 6 p.m., before low attendance forced a move back to 7:30.

In 1996, CMS added mandatory metal-detector checks for spectators at all football and basketball games.

In 2001, following the West Charlotte-Garinger incident, CMS permanently moved up the start times of games to 7 p.m.

System athletics director Vicki Hamilton met with Charlotte Catholic officials Monday morning and said CMS staff are devising a plan for Friday's Garinger-Olympic game as well as six other CMS home games.

"When you have a disruption at an athletic event," she said, "you're going to have to shore up what you need to do, what type of coverage you need to have. We're beginning to have those conversations now. This was an isolated incident. I know Garinger's players wanted their homecoming game to be special and so did the fans in the stands.

"Unfortunately, some people there - and I can't call them fans - decided they wanted to disrupt a football game. This reflects so badly on them and unfortunately, the carryover goes out to the school and community, and Garinger has done everything right this year as far as their stadium and security plan."

Olympic coach Shuford said he had not heard from any parents with any concerns about playing at Garinger. He called this week "business as usual."

"I never felt threatened when I coached there," he said. "My kids have been to that stadium since they were little. My son will be on the sideline Friday night. I think you have a bigger risk standing in the Wal-Mart parking lot at midnight trading film than any concern you have going to Garinger for a football game."

Lawndale Burns joins Sweet 16 football poll

Click here for video with West Rowan coach Scott Young

Welcome Lawndale Burns High to the Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 poll.

The top nine spots remained the same, but former No. 10 Marvin Ridge lost to a ranked team for the second straight week and fell out of the poll. That allowed Charlotte Country Day to move up two spots to No. 10 and allowed the Bulldogs from Lawndale to get ranked for the first time this season.

Burns (7-1) has won seven straight games since a 42-19 loss to Boiling Springs Crest (5-2).
The Bulldogs have topped 40 points in six of their seven wins.

Waddell star commits to Georgia State

Waddell High 6-8 center Jervon Pressley has committed to Georgia State, coach Jermaine Walker said.

Pressley has legitimate 3-point range and can handle the ball. He can play center or either forward position.

Controversial play stops Victory Christian football game

The Greensboro News & Record today reports on an incident that stopped Friday's Victory Christian at Oak Ridge Military Academy game.

Oak Ridge is a military school for boys and girls in grades 7-12, located in Oak Ridge, which is in Guilford County near Greensboro.

The game was stopped in the first quarter after emergency medical personnel took nearly an hour to attend to Victory Christian wide receiver and long snapper Jonathan Bridges, who suffered a blow to the head on a punt.

Victory Christian coach Frank Crockett told the Observer Tuesday morning that an Oak Ridge player, with a running start, speared Bridges, who was knocked unconscious on the play. When he came to, Crockett said, he complained he had lost feeling in his extremities.

Oak Ridge coach and athletics director Otis Yelverton told the Greensboro paper that he disagreed that the hit was a spear. He called it a "stinger."

"That's part of the game," Yelverton told the Greensboro paper.

Victory Christian coach Crockett said Bridges, a Division I recruit, is OK now. He was released from a Greensboro-area hospital Saturday.

Crockett also said he did not know that Oak Ridge had post-graduate players on its team before the Kings arrived.

Victory Christian, which started the season with 30 players, is down to 24 due to injury. Crockett said his team (0-6) has three seniors, two juniors and 25 freshmen and sophomores.

Oak Ridge (6-0) is a first-year team with several fifth-year players and nearly a dozen Division I-caliber athletes from around the country, the News & Record reported.

The newspaper also reported that the Hargrave Military Academy high school team (1-5), which was going to play Oak Ridge this week, canceled the game after learning about the post-graduate players.

Crockett told the Observer Tuesday that he didn't know about the fifth-year players until his team arrived for the game last week.

"We got up there and found out they were some grown men," Crockett said. "But it was their homecoming and we did it as a good faith gesture."

Crockett said his team wasn't scheduled to play Oak Ridge and he was surprised when Oak Ridge coach Yelverton called early last week requesting game film. Yelverton told the Greensboro paper that he had scheduled the game last summer, but declined to tell the paper who he had spoken with.

"I don't know how the game got made," Crockett said. "The guy called me last Monday and asked to exchange film. I told him I'd never heard of Oak Ridge. He said we scheduled a game back in July. I told him that couldn't be true because I had not heard anything about it, and we had an open date on that date anyway."

Crockett said he forwarded Yelverton to school officials.

"They didn't know about it either," Crockett said. "But later, it was decided to play them."

Why do we identify prep teams the way we do?

Got several phone calls on the same topic last weekend.

Several folks wanted to know why we called Porter Ridge "Indian Trail Porter Ridge" or Crest "Boiling Springs Crest."

The reason is kind of simple.

Charlotte is a very transient town with lots of newcomers who are not familiar with schools. They tend to know the locals ones by default, like Butler or Hopewell or Vance, but we try to help them by identifying where our out-of-county schools are.

It's the same thing the Associated Press does for its stories and polls. Butler, to AP, is Matthews Butler. Hopewell is Huntersville Hopewell and so on.

And no, we'll never call Crest "Shelby Crest."

High School football team cancels game....because opponent was too big

A Rhode Island football team refused to play a high school game last week for a rather unusual reason.

St. George's (RI) canceled last Friday's scheduled game with fellow Independent School League opponent Lawrence Academy (Mass). St. George's officials felt the players from Lawrence Academy were too large.

This is kind of like, say, Charlotte Christian refusing to play Raleigh Ravenscroft because Knights coaches felt the Ravens had too many players who were 6-5, 240.

St. George's officials expressed concern prior to canceling the game and Lawrence Academy offered to play at "half-speed" to prevent injury.

Ultimately, the half-speed option was not taken.

"This is strictly a safety issue,'' St. George's headmaster Eric Peterson told the Boston Globe. "We are trying to keep our kids reasonably safe in a game that can be terribly exciting but has risks."

Three league headmasters will determine whether or not the game counts as a forfeit or not.

According to the Boston Globe, three Lawrence Academy offensive linemen weigh between 300 and 350 pounds, much larger than St. George's kids.

St. George was winless last year but is 2-0 this year, pending the outcome of the forfeit (or not).
