Shelby out, Lincolnton in The Sweet 16

See a video about this week's poll with Indian Trail Sun Valley coach Scott Stein by clicking here

The Observer’s football Sweet 16 is tightening up.

The top four spots are the same and there’s only one new team. Lincolnton, which shut out Shelby 21-0 last week, moves at No. 16, dropping Shelby out of the same spot.

Lincolnton (5-0) beat preseason top 10 Sweet 16 team Belmont South Point 43-42 and is averaging 41.4 points per game.

West Charlotte, despite being idle last week, moved up to No. 11 from No. 15. Indian Trail Sun Valley dropped from No. 11 to 15th after losing to Associated Press N.C. 3A top 10 team Asheville 21-14 Friday. Also falling was Lenoir Hibriten, from fifth to seventh, after losing to No. 1 Butler 35-28 Friday at home.

I know this poll is rarely accurate and only focuses on the same teams but Lawndale Burns lost their first game to rival #9 Crest then has proceeded to thump Kings Mountain, Asheville (at Asheville) and defending champ 3A South Point in three consecutive weeks and they don't even deserve consideration? Yet Sun Valley loses to the same Asheville team Burns embarrassed and they are still in? Clover is 10th, Lincolnton is 15th and South Point played them both tough, and AL Brown still receives votes after barely getting by Kings Mountain. It will all play out in the end but it would be nice to see some actual thought and research put into this poll as well as respect for teams who are working their tails off and playing a tough schedule.

The Burns puppies are looking pretty good as of late but you must not negate that Charger trouncing in a RIVALRY game nonetheless with brand new Qb 45 19 you were whooped like stray dogs just a fact and your defense is not state of the art

The Charlotte Observers Sweet Sixteen always has and always will be a joke as there is no logistical way to compare schools of different classifications. To be fair and accurate, it should be reduced down to the top 5 local teams in each classification.

I was starting to wonder how many games Independence was gonna have to lose before they were finally removed.....

Burns did lose to Crest, so has everyone else. I didn't say they are better than Crest I said they deserve consideration as a top team especially when you consider other on this list. Funny, Shelby took a beating and stayed in an extra week with no wins of note and the defense held South Point to one td, the other was late with back ups. Lincolnton gave up 42 against the same team. Kings Mountain 13 against Burns, 32 against AL Brown. Not saying they are world beaters just seems like they deserve a little respect.

I appreciate the respect you gave Hibriten after their great game against Butler. I believe they earned respect against a tough opponent. I actually thought they'd drop to 8 or 9.
One correction- Newton-Conover is 4-0, and is the class of the CVAC conference.
Lincolnton deserved to be in the poll weeks ago, thanks for finally giving notice.
Lastly, you're still considering South Caldwell. The teams South has beaten have a combined record of 1-19. They haven't played anybody of note. Let's see how they do now that conference play starts.

In second post was not trying to knock burns down hard they have been working very hard over the past yr and a half need to keep working on pass defense West Rowan may be in the future though i truly believe West hAS NOT been tested like the dogs think the Bulldogs have a cocky yet extremely determined head coach i am excited about Clev Coun football especially Crest and Burns good luck POLLS ARE OFF A BIT but remember we are only half way through the season dogs will get their due respect!
